R50/53 I CAN'T DRIVE 55
#1
Well, yesterday was first real motoring experience with'Tigger'. My wife and I decided to go out lunch, since we have eaten at all the restuarants in Olympia, WA we decided to put some miles on 'Tigger' and headed for Portland, OR. On the way out of Olympia we saw four MINIs on the streets of Olympia, (Blue, Yellow, and 2 Chile Red) way cool.
As we headed down I-5 the first thing I noticed was that 'Tigger' wanted to get out and run. As we motored down the road we were cruising at 75mph,did not feel like it. So I set the cruise control at just over 75 and sat back.
The cruise control is great. I do not know about the MC's with the 5 speed but with the CVT the cruise is awesome. As we started to climb the hills, I noticed that the speed barely moved but the the tach started to go up. The tach went up and down as we climbed the hills but I never saw the speed change. Also, the CVT transmission is totally smooth, there is in the normal 'D' mode I never felt the change in gears as the spped increased.
This is the most fun I have had behind the wheel of a car.
While driving to Portland we saw a Silver/Black MINI heading north on I-5, While in Portland never saw any MINIs.
Headed back to WA about 3pm and on the way we saw a Silver/Black MINI heading south on I-5 - (ok someone in Portland went to Oylmpia for lunch).
On the way back I turned off the cruise control, and my wife had to keep reminding me to slow down, 'Tigger' just kept getting close to 90mph. I can not believe the power and speed, I LOVE THIS CAR........
IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT......

Our MINI does the same. Whether I'm motoring or the wife,... when we happen to glance at the speedo, we're both guilty of 'lead foot' syndrome. Somehow, the MINI manages to squeek out a few more mph every few minutes. I've had this happen in the past when driving a larger car, the ride was softer and smoother and you couldn't feel the road as well as you could in a small car, and thus you drove to the speed you 'felt".
This is true in the MINI, how or why, I don't know. But it sure is fun to drive!!!

Great post, mini-rolls! After a similar spirited drive, I returned home to report that HARMINI loves to go 90mph. She settles down, revs just right and this feels like the optimal speed for her (she has a CVT, too).
With all the bad press about the CVT, it's time that we heard some good stuff. Like how convenient it is to switch back and forth from the normal to sport to Steptronic mode. Especially in the city, it's so much fun to zoomzoom in Step mode, then drop to normal drive when you get to a red light. Switch back over to sport drive when it turns green for the first two gears, then upshift to 3rd and go. Then when you hit traffic, back to normal drive for the best low-gear cruising I've ever felt in a car. The engine-breaking feature is fantastic. All this fun without ever lifting your left foot!!!
