R50/53 MINIs : Cop Attracters or Repellers?
definite cop attractor IMHO
I've been driving for 30+ years and never gotten a ticket. In the last year, since I've been a MINIac, I've been stopped 3X, and motioned (from the side of the highway) to "slow it down" several times (even though doing the speed limit or slower). I've been stopped once for "too dark tint." He tested it with his little doo-hickey and it proved to be legal 35% - said he'd "note it in my record for future stops."
All three times it became rather evident they just wanted to check out the car more closely - first one each had seen, they said
.
Oh, well - it's worth it

In 4 years I've primarily driven this: (fairly loud and clearly modified, with visible autoX car numbers, etc)

and this (bright red Porsche with illegal tint),

You'd figure a 19 year old male in either of these cars would make for a pretty good attraction index, right? Oddly enough, the only car I've ever been stopped in was a purple minivan.
Go figure.

funny you should ask...
The first week I got my MCS I was followed by police several times in the city. After one particularly long and obviously intentional tail accross town I mentioned to my co-workers that the new mini attracted police. They said it was my imagination. Perhaps. My other vehicle is a very high 4x4 F150 Supercrew so I maybe never noticed em in my rearview as easily. I also thought maybe it was the temporary registration paper in the window.
After I got the official registration sticker the tails continued. These guys would tail me from one end of town through many turns etc. till I got to the next township. I wasn't stopped but it sucked anyway. I guess it's the liquid yellow w/ black stripes flashiness, or maybe there was some reason they were looking for a particular mini at that time. Seems to have stopped occuring now.
I did get stopped for 'erratic driving' one evening. I was traveling a street that connects two ends of town and there are clusters of 3 to 4 manhole covers every 40ft. for 5 miles. I have runflats and the bumps suck plus it is fun to try to avoid them. I explained all this to the officer and also said that if I was impaired I wouldn't have been able to weave through that obstacle course without hitting a single manhole cover. He said I sounded coherent enough that he wouldn't test my breath and admitted that the street was quite a bear as far as the manhole covers being bumpy. Then he asked me "So how fast can you take a 90 degree turn in this thing? 40? I replied that I had never tried taking a turn too fast so I wouldn't know.
heh heh.

#1 - The moderator said it best. First and Foremost, it's your driving (bad) habits that will attract LE attention and get you in trouble....
#2 - Color of car. I know this has been discussed, but even the American Insurance Institute has done it's math on this, and therefore you will always pay higher insurance premiums on a red car than you will on a silver one.....
Some things that LE Officer will appreciate if you are caught on radar/laser, especially at night.
1) Dont make him chase you, pull over as soon as you see that he/she is coming for you, and park as far over as you can safely do so.
2) Turn on interior dome lights, esp if you have tinted glass.
3) Do not make any sudden moves to under seats, glove box or other areas of car as LE pulls up behind you. There will be time to get Registration later when asked.
4) Be HONEST/BE CURTIOUS. IF you are asked if you know how fast you were going and say "not sure," that tells the officer two things: That you are either a liar, or were not paying attention while driving....both will mean an insta-ticket !
Honesty can go a long way with folk whom are used to being lied to.....
