I don't see that many MINIs, but I see more MCSs than MCs. I like like motoring in something different

You don't need to have credit cards. Merely access to them in your name.

How about this: get one, maybe, two, and then when they arrive, cut them up. They probably won't even send statements if you don't use them. It is literally only as much hassle as filling out the application. If you start now, you might be able to buy a house rather than renting one. Then the equity and write-offs can open the doors to an MCS and a Mustang.

Oops - sorry about that. I hate when they list all the standard stuff (airbags, ABS) - you have to sort through it to find the real options.

In any case, take a drive and take a drive - it will give you an idea how the pre-'05 MCS accelerates....

Hey SB! I just bought an MCS and know how you feel. When we originally test drove the MC, my wife didn't like the lack of power in the car. That is the reason that she went with the Subaru as medical reasons prevent he using the clutch.

You seem like you have a good head on your shoulders. Sit down and work your finances and see what you can do. Rates right now are pretty low going through a credit union and you might be able to lower your current payments while upgrading. You will just have to shop around and you might have to ditch a few of the extras that you have in your car until you can budget them in. Good luck with this and I hope you finally get what you want.

I've heard differing opinions on this. Care to give more than a blacket statement?

Personally, I hate the idea of paying interest on a depreciating asset. I hate the idea of being tied to a monthly car payment. And I hate the idea of having to jump through hoops to get rid of a car I don't really care for...

Not true. I don't have an S. Heck, I'm just a "wannabe" who has to motor vicariously through my g/f (JerseyGirl)'s MCS (Nittany). I occasionally get to drive the car, but never in a spirited manner. I've spent much more time wrenching on the car than driving it. So trust me, after over 2 years of being on the sidelines of the MINI community, I can safely say I want an MCS more than ANYBODY. But financially, it's just not in the cards... For me, an MCS would be a toy and until I can pay cash for one, it ain't happening. I refuse to go into debt for toys [again].

TSB: Look into the Borla exhaust for the Cooper. It really muscles up the sound of a Cooper. IMHO, it sounds better than a stock MCS and most aftermarket MCS cat-back systems I've heard.

Get off the sidelines! Cooper's aren't that slow compared to an S. If you get away from straight lines, Coopers are every bit the equals of Cooper Ss. Do some suspension, brake, and tire upgrades and get that thing on the track. You'll be surprised at what can happen.

A Cooper S is only faster than a Cooper when you're hard on the gas pedal. Throw corners into the mix, and that advantage dissapears.

You're right on that point, though... I've got the Borla on my Cooper and everybody loves the sound of it.

Here let me say something new... I think i want the S mostly for the supercharger whine.

Oh, wait. I think i've said that 50 billion times

I had a throaty/loud car. High-flo cat, intake, and exhaust. Synthetic everything. It was nice. I wouldn't mind doing it to another car... but i love that whine.

After i test drive some S's, i'll decide if it's what i REALLY want. I never really tested it's handling before, i can only judge from the passenger seat at this point. Everyone that drives my cooper says it's a blast. Yes, i know. Remember the 20k miles in 7 months i put on it? i just want to see what I'LL like better. Someone mentioned the S just has acceleration... didn't i state before i like to accelerate fast and take corners a little quick? The power isn't THAT important to me. I'm just a wee little girl. But to accelerate and whine

I'm holding onto my Cooper as long as possible. STILLLL just debating! But i know i want to stay in a MINI. Everything about it is perfect for me. Easy to park, the seat goes farther forward than i need it to, it cranks all the way up, it has tilt wheel! I can carry three people, even SUPER TALL ones can sit behind me. It handles great, it's a ton of fun, and it's so freaking adorable.

Didn't mean for the discussion to go this far, haha.

oh c'mon... we all know you whine enough for both you and your car! Seriously, I say do what you want... even if it doesn't make the most sense for you, you've gotta follow your heart sometimes! I'm willing to bet that the MINI doesn't make the most sense for a lot of people here... but we got 'em because of what we want. after all, you only live once!

How true. The most "sensible" thing for me would have been to keep the bullet-proof dependable '93 Subaru with only 78K miles instead of getting the shiny new '02 Cooper - and then, even more sensible would have been to keep the Cooper instead of getting an '05 S.

....But I'm happy with the decisions I made.

TSB - go find one to test drive and firm up your opinions, then set your goals accordingly. ...That's another whole side of this spending/saving equation not yet touched. Some of us use these kinds of desires as our motivation to work harder and get further. The trick is not to be wholly consumed by the desires.

Sorry... my knee-jerk reaction reflex was triggered by too many people implying that Coopers are slow.

HALLEUJAH! PREACH ON BRO BULLFROG!

TSB: An Idea... How about a 50-75 shot of Nitrous? No it wouldn't have that whine but would scare the heck out of MCS owners when they see your Develed Egg blow past them!

While I agree with that statement I think it needs some clarification.

I was young once for a short time. But I've been stupid for a loooooooong time now.

I just found out about an all EB '02 S, loaded (PP, SP, CWP, NAV, PDC) under 35,000 miles. $18K could make it yours.

I'm sure you could find someone to swap the nav system with you....maybe...if it were possible. If not, a nav system is not such a bad thing.
