R50/53 What is the real life fuel economy of a Cooper S-city/highway??
What is the real life fuel economy of a Cooper S-city/highway??
I know what the manual says, however you can never reach those numbers in real life driving. What can I expect to get if I do say 50/50 city/highway?
Thanks

Depends on how many red lights you sit at and your highway speed. I usually do about 75 on the freeway and often sit in fairly poor city traffic. My mix is about 60-70 city and the rest highway, I get about 21 mpg. I hope this helps a little.
It all boils down to how you drive. In my 03 MCS, shifting at 3k rpm, I averaged 26 to 27 mpg's. That's with some city driving then some steady driving on county roads at 60 mph for up to two miles between red lights. I've lost about 1 mpg from from the last place I lived where most of my time I was on the highway but had a little more stop and go traffic than I do now.
I travel about 14 miles each way to work. I take a 2 mile residential road and then the other 12 is highway. I'll get 28 or so in the Cooper S. On a long trip, we managed to get 32 out of it. I lent the car to my sister for a week. Her commute is about 3 miles to work each way on all residential streets. I checked the avg. MPG computer and it said 21 mpg. We had just filled up and gave the car to her right afterward, so it said 25 mpg before we gave it to her.
I would say you'd be lucky to see 25 mpg in your commute. Unfortunately, the MCS is not a hybrid or economy car like many people think!!!

my commute is about 10 miles each way, roughly 50% highway and
50% stop and go traffic. if i short shift and go easy on the acceleration,
i get ~ 30 mpg.
in my normal drive mode, (shift at 4500 rpm and not too shy on the gas), i get 26 to 27 mpg.
that's twice the actual mpg of my eclipse gsx turbo which has been replaced by 05 mcs.
(my landrover actually got better gas mileage than the gsx
)

I get around 25mpg mixed-use. I used to have a job that had me driving almost exclusively on the interstate to work, and mileage didn't change. Granted, I drive 75-80 all the time.
Mileage is the worst I've ever gotten in a car, including the heavily modified hondas I drove for years.

)Loved the Honda Civic that we replaced. I could keep it floored all day and I would still get 35 mpg. Though it did only have 105 hp. On trips, we were looking at 43-45 mpg.

Worse if you sit in traffic on a regular basis, better if you get on the freeway and use a cruise control.
For auto transmission about 20-25 mpg depending on which mode you drive in. Better mpg with D and a little less with SD mode.
Keep your tires inflated well and don't haul around extra weight unless you have to.:impatient
I don't understand all these reports of 21-25 mpg! I get that ONLY if I am stuck in gridlock, motoring under 15 mph. I generally shift at 3K+, motor spiritedly on the highways
, and I have gotten as high as 36 mpg. I generally average 29-31 mpg on each tank. Of course, I have rarely, if ever, redlined her!

I've noticed some variability depending on my driving style. Conservative speeds (under 70mph highway), with lower shift rpms, I am getting 28-32mpg. At the opposite end, driving hard on my all city streets 8 mile commute, I get right around 20 mpg. Average so far has been about 25-26 mpg.
well i am writing up a trip log but I got 32mpg at 70mph on highways. Thats is having my average speed at 60mph so unless you drive like a... unspirited mini driver. Now no matter what i do I have yet to go below 20mpg even running on the drag... so maybe its just my car.

Mileage
In my '03 MCS, the computer doesn't report below 29 on the tank unless I'm driving pretty aggressively! Typical summer is 31-34. It seems like 70 mph is the worst mileage. I've actually gotten better at 80 (38.5) than at 70 (36-37) while driving to a kart race in Rock Island Illinois.
The best I've achieved on a tank was a leisurely, non-A/C drive from South Bend to Indy, 50-55mph, where it stayed about 54 until I hit Kokomo (a.k.a. "stoplight city"). That dropped it to 50 where it stayed for the rest of the to Indy.
At 34mpg, I'm happy enough. That's not as good as my 2.0 liter '95 Neon ACR, though, and power was comparable.

I am at 5555 miles on my MCS, and average 24mpg. Best I've gotten on a tank has been 27mpg, all highway miles between Vegas and San Diego. I was doing 90mph most of that trip.
When is an engine considered "broken-in"? I can't imagine ever getting 32mpg with my girl. I am consciously shifting at 3k and driving a little less aggressively on this tank to see if I get improved mileage.

Around my town, about 21-24 MPG and on the highway, with cruise control doing 80-90 MPH about 28-32 MPG.
I tell people I adverage 25 MPG City/Highway with the AC on.
These numbers include Pilo Racing CAI, 15% pulley and iPod jamming.

I have a JCW MCS and I drive mostly on the interstate. If I am good and shift at 3K RPM and keep it around there on the interstate (~70mph) I can consistently get as good as 33 mpg with the driver's window down and no AC. If the AC comes on I get 29-30mpg. Even if I'm not that good and shift at higher RPM's and go 80, I tend to get 27mpg. The worst mileage I've gotten was 9mpg but that was with 120miles of driving on the track
With about 35,000 miles on my '02 MCS the OBC says that I am getting 29.0 mpg, but when I calculate it by hand I get between 26 and 27 mpg. This is a daily 4 mile back road commute with one or two days on the weekend on the highway doing 50 to 300 miles.
I always get much better when I can run secondary roads and maintain around 55 - 60 mph. Then I can get up into the low 30s. When I do track days or auto-X I can get it right down to 10 - 15 mpg, lower if I am having a good day.

MINI Cooper gas mileage
'05 MC, with 5K miles on it. I have been keeping a log of my gas mileage since I purchased the car. I get a solid 36 to 35.5 mpg. 25% city, 75% highway. Terrain is gently rolling to moderate hills. Shifting under 3000rpm and doing within 5-10mph over the speed limit. I coast whenever I can get a good downhill run.
