Big Congrats!

As to mpg... I wonder if auto climate control makes a difference when using a/c. We keep our a/c button lit at all times, yet we pull 31's for milage. Granted, it is mostly highway driving and we are no too aggressive. Also, we live on flat land. This must be a factor too?

Who lives in the hills? Any low milage due to that?

i already filled up once, but put my receipts away. i'll calculate that tonight, but i'm filling up today for my second time since this thing started, so i'll post both.

i did NOT drive any different than i normally do, though. i like to gun it from stop lights every once in a while, and i like to take corners a little but i only used my a/c one day, so that should help me out a little.

Last week I kept the shifts all under 3K, the AC off, and was light on the pedal everywhere I went. Saw 29.2 MPG city in my MCS - I think I only hit the freeway once during that tank, so purely city driving.

After reading 4 pages of this, looks like we can conclude that, if you want to save gas and drive fast, get a Cooper.

You can average 30mpg redlining the Cooper, but to do that you have to shift at 3k with the S.

If you don't really care about gas mileage, get a Cooper S and go nuts!

What do you think was one of the biggest reasons for getting a Cooper for me?

My first 3 fill ups i averaged 34-36 mpg... then i kind of learned the car

Our post in a different thread a week ago.........

......"Ok, we made this emergency run to central Florida from northern Ohio over yesterday and today. We traveled 1,043 miles , used 33.6 gallons of high test , averaged $3.29 per gallon. Our best was 33.7mpg (the run through Virginia/North Carolina/into South Carolina and our worst was 26.6 (through the hills of West Virginia) pretty much with air on booking along at around 80mph, except through Virginia. By the way my MCS is a Plain Jane (PJ), no cruise. No back problems, no sleeping legs problems. No issues. Well there was that chunk of concrete thrown up by a concrete truck in Canton that bashed the lower right corner of the windshield, but did not break it! Every gas station had high test, one station had no regular in South Carolina, other than that it was no problem finding gas.
Virtually no traffic, lots of police and only a few folks doing 90 or better by my estimates."

Just filled up this morning.

03 Cooper, 35,000 total miles

390 miles
12.1 gallons 91 octane
$37.86
32.23 mpg
Average speed 31.4 mph

This tank had only 25 or 30 freeway miles.
I usually get about 30 mpg. My total average for the life of the car is 30.21. That includes 10 track days,

This tank was interesting to me because it is the first full tank I have run after an MTH software upgrade. MTH claims their upgrade will increase gas mileage. So far I like it. We'll see after a few more tankfuls.

interesting. Was the MTH upgrade a mpg upgrade specifically?

Not an mpg specific upgrade. Volker stated on the MTH thread that their files do result in increased mpg.

Don't have numbers, but ever since the gas price went through the roof, I've been trying to be easy with the throttle.. So far so good.
I usually refuel every 1 week but, after trying to shift under 3Krpm, no hard starts, trying to roll as much as possible, I still have gas left after two weeks..
I guess it just proves how much fuel the MCS dumps at WOT..
maybe it's time for a ECU flash.

I posted this over at mini2, decided to "share". This is a snapshot of my "driving" since I've had the MINI.

Oh... about the calculations. Everything in yellow is calculated. Miles per week is an estimate based on how many miles I have to drive, plus a bit more.

Well after last weeks go at high MPG's, I have returned to cruising on the highway at what I normally do.

3200-3500 RPM, not 3000, which means I'm moving with the flow better, but passing more, and downshifting to 4th to do most of it.

Shifting at 4-5K RPM, not 3k RPM. When in the city in light traffic, not upshifting to 3rd, just staying in 2nd, more responsive.

I did not do the numbers yesterday when I filled up, but I had only gone about 40 KMs (25 miles) less on the trip reader, with the same amount of fuel.

I can afford to motor in this car the way it was intended to be motored in

MPG on an MCC

I have documented my second fill-up. Yesterday, I pumped 11.875 gallons. My trip meter displayed 308 miles. This gives an MPG of 26 ! I drive a 63 mile round-trip commute eady work-day (98% highway, cruising at 75-80 MPH). I think driving with the top down everyday is VERY, VERY fun, but definetely affects the mileage.

What have other MCC owners experieced?

Here's my recent mileage report based on one tank of gas.

2005 MC, no performance mods. Car is eight weeks old
Tank of Gas = 13.150 gallons
Total Miles on tank = 485
MPG = 36.8821

My driving is 60/40% Highway/City.

I have been driving the car like I have a raw egg under the gas pedal and shifting between 2500 - 3000 rpms. I do not drive faster than 3000 rpm and I coast whenever possible. AC is turned off and the sunroof is open. At slower speeds <45mph I open the side windows and at speeds >45mph I close the side windows. I never drive in the fast lane. Okay, sometimes I speed up to catch up to another MINI driving in the same direction

MTFBWY,

Ok got some numbers from the Superstreet Power tour i did on Sept 15.

For the trip up did 192 miles burnt 5.11 gallons = 37.57 mpg. This is all hwy from Richmond, VA to Baltimore, MD. Speed was 72-80 mph bit of Drafting for the most part.

for the Trip back Balt to Hooters in Chester, VA 198 miles burnt 9.21 gallons = 21.42. Speed varied from 25 - 140+mph.

05' MCSa

Drove in alot of NYC bumper traffic, gunning from lights, beating taxis, and half the time with auto climate and 3 more ppl in the car.......20.1mpg

Got back to NJ, the land of smooter roads, highways, and cheaper gas. Went to refill and drove another 25 miles to home and got 30.5mpg. Initially had the cruise control on but found it too annoying and decided to vary speed a little, mostly doing 65mph.

Hard to tell yet, but so far my observation is that the MCS is not as fuel mising as my Jetta 1.8T 5spd. Which is chipped + other work and pushing 215hp with somewhat heavy 18 inch performance wheel/tire combo and I still manage to average 25mpg while driving it HARD for 80% of the time.
I can maybe average 25mpg on the MCSa if I go easy for 80% of the time and drive 60/40 highway/city. Strange.

Just got back from a little vacation out west. Best mileage (that i tracked anyway) was 30.1mpg (actually, not OBC) driving across Oregon. 100% highway, mostly 70mph.

I averaged 28.6 for the trip according to the OBC. Car is an '05 MCS, three weeks old.

Just filled up again.

31.8 MPG
Average speed 29.5 mph

Same type of driving as below except it was hotter out here last week and I ran the AC more, and the big difference is I took off the 15 holeys and put on 16's with runflats. About 20lbs more per corner.

My preliminary conclusion is MTH is a must have upgrade for your MC. Not only is the performance noticeably better. but the MPG increase is about 2 mpg.

Also the 16 inch wheels with runflats that come on the MC sport package take a toll on gas mileage.

I have driven very conservatively since I got my MCSa. 75% of my driving is in city traffic with hills. On the highway I have not (since I caught myself speeding the first day) driven above 70. So far my average for a total of 1458 miles (at the last fill up) has been 22.7 mpg.

After one week of daily driving, mostly with the top up, and keeping it at 75mph on my 60 mile round-trip to/from work, I have managed 27.56 MPG (actual, not OBC). I still have not gotten past the 1,200 mile break-in, so I'm hoping this will improve...

I've been keeping most shifts under 3K, limiting use of the A/C in the mornings and TRYING to keep my foot out of it. Using those tips I have gotten 30-31 mpg consistently the past 4-5 fill ups- thanks for all the tips! I can't wait until it starts to cool down and I don't need any A/C- it was 103 yesterday.

My MCS has 5000 miles and from the beginning the best mileage I've gotten is 24mpg for normal driving (80% highway, 2-3 miles of stop and go traffic each morning), 27mpg for a road trip to Vegas. In SoCal I do use the AC many days - it is really such a drag on mileage? Do my 17" run-flats make a big difference? No matter how I drive, I can't get to 300 miles on a fill-up. Does mileage improve as the car breaks in more? Am I really that heavy-footed??? I used to get 35mpg from my beater 96 Civic before Mini, so I think I know how to drive conservatively.

Your mileage will improve as the engine breaks in.

The wheel diameter won't really play a part as long as the tire outer diameter is within factory specs - this way your overall gearing will still be in the factory range.

We've seen on this post (and others) that the AC actually "costs" about 3 mpg. I've only had my MINI in "AC weather" here in NC, so I'm anxious to drive it in cooler weather and realize some of these savings!
