I wish the light was on the tach which is where I am looking most of the time. My first fill up I got 33 and that was adhering to the break in variable speed and RPM, I was expecting much worse. I am finishign the break in this week so I will repost with my numbers for this week.

Don't think I'd be too good at this game....Saturday I averaged about 10-11 mpg while doing about 125 mph on the autobahn.....even worse when I'd gun it to pass someone....one day i'll learn.

Wow! What a difference intent makes...
I was working hard to shift at 3000 rpm, drive slow and smooth - I usually average 22mpg around town (to work) but scored 30mpg today.
My driving style is sort of like Steve McQueen, but today I was driving like Marge Simpson and it proved more efficient. It was fun (today) because I was working at something, but I'm sure it would be less fun if my budget truly depended on it... it's nice to get on the "go" pedal when you're getting passed for the whole drive to work and back! :impatient

It's not a good idea to run the tank down all the time.

2 things happen, both bad. You get more gunk that builds up in you tank into your engine. And your fuel pump is in the tank to cool it, if you keep running the tank down, the pump life will be shorter from running warm more often.

I kept my rev. counter pegged at 3000rpm today on the highway.

Wait? are you saying 1/4 left, or 3/4 left? Wow.

I have 279 miles on my tank, and have a little less than ~1/2 tank on the gauge . If I end up filling at 5/16, I'll be getting only 30 .

3/4 left, or used the first 1/4. It's boring, but I'm shooting for 40

Just started today, didn't drive much yesterday, but I think I'm going to do extremely bad at this. Just installed the JCW intake last week and my brief attempt on the way home at keeping the RPMs around 3000 for shift points was almost painful!

I'll be through this tank of gas by Saturday morning, so we'll see.

Just a simple question. If one of us reports consumption around 80mpg, will men in black suits arrive, and swap out the "faulty" carburetor with a "better" one ?

The only thing I'm doing different is cruising on the highway at 3000 rpm.
Otherwise I'm up-shifting at 4K+. I still run hard on the on-ramps, merging at passing lane speeds when the going is safe. In 3rd, at 5K+, then I just go straight to 5th.

I still downshift all the time, rev matching as I do.

The last 2 mornings have been calm, but the motor home has been into some heavy head winds.

3K is 105KPH(65MPH)

lot15 looks like were on par.. haven't hit 3/4 tank (used the first 1/4) yet just passed the 178 mile mark. doing all highway normal for fuel saving mode is hitting 200 at the 3/4 tank left. this puts me on the 500+ for a tank of gas

This is hard! When I hit that on-ramp with the little s-curve I really want to let her run out in 2nd, but I'm trying to do the zen mind-control thing and exercise self-discipline. Ugh. Shifting at 3k sux.

I know the OBC isn't very accurate, I'll have to wait for the fill-up to get the gallon total, but at this moment it says 34.5. Have some highway miles this morning, so I might get it bumped up to 35.

This contest was a good idea, but I'm glad it's only a week.

At 1/2 a tank I hit 415KMs (258miles).

I had to do a whole bunch of extra city miles today, so will do a splash and go when I get into the city, so I can get a fill when I get home tomorrow.

Contest or no contest, I hate when that light comes on

Mugami is going to win

I filled up the day before all this started. I am currently averaging 32.2 (down from yesterday's 32.6). Mostly (80%) highway miles. I've gone about 230-240 miles at 1/2 tank left (and 1/2 gone ).

I have an auto-x Sunday, so I'm going to quit this before my tank runs out. I'm fairly confident that it'll be at 32.2 MPG.

BTW, I have an MCS.

Well, back and forth to work three times this week, 29 miles each way, back roads and freeway about 50/50. OBC shows 30.1. In the past it's been optimistic by about 3mpg. I'll divide it out when I refill. MINI is an 04 with JCW 210. I hate shifting at 3K, but I can tell the mileage is better.

Nope Daniel i dont think i will. I had to be in town today. Taking brother from hospital to hospital for different test. Also was Challenged by 2 Honda's and a WRX. All of which had me use excessive amounts of RIght foot action. current is 231 miles at 1/2 tank. Which puts it doing only 50 miles to go from 3/4 tank to 1/2 tank VS the norm (for total mpg) of 100-125 miles. then its 90-115 for 1/2 to 1/4 and last bit its 75-106 (but i normally wont go past 50 miles before filling up)

I recently drove from Sumter to Spartanburg SC and averaged 37 on the Interstate first time I ever got mileage that good. Usually I get 35 highway and 30 in town. I try to shift at 4K in all gears

Same here in FL. There's no reason for me to try when the AC does cut my mileage down.

This reminds me of "the contest" on Seinfeld. I'm trying to hang in there, still no A/C, still getting 30.5 average all this week. Good thing we're all on the honor system.

Yep - we'll see who can remain "Master/Mistress of their Domain!"

I've actually been quite pleased averaging 27 or so (OBC), usually I'm zipping around (with AC on) and getting about 22-23 or so.

Actually I just don’t want to reveal my super engine tweaks. Though I’m speeding around town and highways, my gas mileage is smoking. Right now it’s 35 in town and 46 on the road in my 02 MCS. I’m using the AC but it’s only set at 65 degrees.

I love the honor system.

Really, believe me.

Results of a road trip from San Diego to Sonoma County (N of San Francisco). 2003 MC. First tank was San Diego to Gilroy, second was Gilroy, through The City and around Mendocino and Sonoma, back through The City to Gilroy. Last tank was Gilroy to home, with traffic in LA after midnight! Between Gilroy and King City the OBC average MPG was 41.2

Used 3 tanks of gas. OBC is OBC MPG, MPG is hand calculated.

Tank MPH OBC MPG Miles Gallons
1 63.4 36.1 36.38 458 12.589
2 41.3 34.5 35.89 417 11.618
3 58.9 36.1 36.58 461 12.601

Total 1336 miles 36.808 gallons = 36.296 MPG

The tanks with 12+ gallons had 10-20 miles remaining on the OBC, the needle was at the low edge of the empty light and I topped up.
