I just had my passenger side window motor replaced by Hendrick MINI in Charlotte. They gave me no problems with it at all even though at the time it was working. It made me notice the drivers side window squeak even more as when they replaced the window and regulator they either greased or replaced the squeaky part so it is totally silent now.

No, I just told the service guy it wasn't working, and then waited while they fixed it.

No hassle at all!

Power window motor

2002 MCS 19k mi- Driver's side window stopped working after a morning and warm afternoon in the sun approximately a month ago. I never heard any squealing or anything, but noticed the streak on the inside of the window now and then. Tried the "manual" fix as I live nearly 400 miles away from the nearest dealership with no change. So, I have an appointment at the dealership for 2 Sept. Does anyone know for certain whether or not they are using different motors to replace the malfunctioning ones or is the problem just being reinstalled? I love this car and would like to keep it, but it isn't encouraging to read posts about folks who have had the motors replaced 2 and 3 times! Has there been any communication with Mini USA to see if they have any plans of improving the situation with the motors? Seems like they must be aware of the problem...

If they weren't aware of it, the MotoringFile story today probably woke them up

Oh they are aware of it alright - this is one of those lovely BMW legacies. The E46s were/are plagued by window regulator issues as are other models

Funny thing, my drivers side motor went out last thursday and started working over the weekend. Now I'm heading back to have it replaced.

My car is an October 03 build 2004.

Okay, what is the record? So far, I've had three motors/regulators replaced (two driver's and one passenger's side). This is over a three year period. I believe that the passenger's side is on the way out now, as it's getting noisy. BMW/MINI repairs have warranties for one year, but the motors seem to be lasting me 18 months. That would be $400/yr on average just for window repairs after the warranty runs out.

Interesting ... I know someone had a transmission replaced and the new one failed after almost-but-not-quite-two-years; it turned out there was a *two* year warranty so he was OK.

I just checked a recent invoice and it states: "All BMW warranties & parts installed by dealer are covered for 2 years regardless of mileage to original purchaser, part & labor included." This is good news!

If the keep failing every 18 months, you should be set for life

still lovin' it, why?

window motors-had mine replaced twice, going in for its 3rd time soon ( symtoms back again)
-sunroof get re-lubed everytime they see the car & everytime it comes back aaaagaiin
-steering column three times b4 resolved,
-reflash for stumble issues about 6times, rough idle sometimes comes back
-radiator reserve tank 2times still smell coolant fluid at times so may need to go back.
-boot latch twice,
-going in for throw out bearing and clutch, mayb flywheel soon.
now as far as them window regulators the dealer is trying to blame it on window tint so we will see.
hope somebody has had worst luck than so as to not feel left out
but still love that mincoop this kinda stuff is minor to me as long as its under warranty but after......holy sheit, better throw it in the gutter and go get another

MCS 03 Window Sqealing Dealer Response

I have had both windows squealing now for several months and finally decided to call closest dealer - New Country Motor Cars in Hartford, CT. Still waiting for call-back after 4-messages left on MINI service voice mail. However service guy at Mini of Fairfield County in Stamford, CT called back within the hour and told me he thought the window winder regulators would need replacing.
Fortunately I am still within warranty period, whew!!
This thread has been very informative. Thanks to all.

I just had my second window motor replaced in my '03 Cooper S. I live 150 miles from my dealership so its a pain to get down there, the window hasn't worked for 2 months, so as i'm driving down the freeway i give the toggle a try, and the window starts rolling down, which of course is very frustrating cause it makes me worry if they will fix the problem if its working.

When i got to the dealer I told them what happened and they replaced the motor even though it was working when i got to the dealer. I was talking to my service rep and she told me that they replace 1-2 motors a day (ok senile moment, she might have said a week, but i'm pretty sure it was a day).

The dealer knows these fail regularly and haven't figured out a good solution to the problem, i imagine that if you call and schedule an appointment and drive 400 miles, they'll be understanding, at least my dealer was!

I'd give my dealer A++ for handling the situation as professionals.

I've had 5 replaced in 36,000 miles. 2 drivers side and 3 passenger side. My service adiver had the nerve to tell me they fail this often on other brands as well.

Hey, sorry, joker. Just revisited this thread since the problem. Actually, it's not paint but vinyl and some chrome trim on the door treatments. Wish I could take the credit but the original owner had it done. I liked the effect the moment I saw it.

As for my window troubles, a couple of sharp raps for a few days in a row and the window has worked fine ever since. Go figure????
