R50/53 Zombie Mini drivers...
Even here in the midwest, where people are usually super friendly, the incidence of waving is decreasing. So often now, I wave and flash, and I get nothing, leaving me feeling really stupid. But I still do it. AND, 95% of the time, the people that do not wave back are women. (And I'm a chick, too).
My wife and I took delivery of our MINI last month, and we've been waving at any MINI we see. She even waved at a woman who looked like she might be going to get in a parked MINI... and she got a wave back!
Even though not everyone waves back (sadly we weren't able to experience the camaraderie if the nascent MINI community), it's always fun to try. We rented a PT Cruiser in Colorado a few years back and got waves from other PT Cruiser drivers... something we weren't expecting at all. Personally, I think it's your responsibility as the owner of a unique automobile to acknowledge other motorists with good taste.
(Not that a PT Cruiser is anywhere near as cool as a MINI, but that's another topic altogether.)

The OFFICIAL wave protocol
Since you asked, there are actually two approved Mini wave protocols:
1. If you are a gorgeous woman in a MINI convertible with a good rack, you have to tear your top off and wave what G*d gave you at the other Mini.
2. If you are anything else, a simple wave will do.

When I first got my car - way back in '02 - the wave exchange rate was much greater. I would even wave at MINI's driving in the opposite direction on the freeway - going 75MPH - across the 60' median - with bushes! And I got a few waves back.
I still wave, or flash, or wave and flash, or wave and honk, or etc....
but I'm receiving fewer acknowledgments.
I was in Santa Clara, CA the other day, driving behind a PW/PW MC that didn't even look at me - and I was behind him, in city traffic, for more than 10 miles!
I passed a brand new MCSC on the freeway last week - came up on his left side, slowed down, gave a couple of quick raps on the horn and gave him a thumbs-up, he waved and I sped away (I think he was still in the break-in period - since he was in the slow lane and below the speed limit).
I still give and get waves from other British sports cars - crossed paths with an Austin Healy 1006 the other day and after we both took apprasing looks he waved, I gave him the thumbs-up and we both took off in opposite directions.
The wave is not dead! Long live the wave!

Ah heck, i quit waving a while back. In fact, with the car being funky lately, my reaction to seeing someone driving a Mini is, "You *******!"
Then, of course, I remember I'm driving one myself.
Oh yeah, all women are not gorgeous. Some are down right hideous psycho-hosebeasts.

The Wave
Anything is good! Just do it.
Nothing worse than a fellow motorer ignoring or too busy to give a heads up or smile.
Top Down, Hair Blowing, Sunny Day etc....
Anyone who doesn't wave..... They got issues.

Up here in the rural outback we wave at everyone when eye contact is made. Not that many MINIs locally,2,have heard of a 3rd,but have not seen it yet. When I'm in the city,I wave at other MINIs,most wave back, those that don't are looking elsewhere I think, hope. And if they don't get the wave thing, well their next car will probably be a PT cruiser and they just don't get it

Got a Wave
Had a great weekend in Greenville, SC. While pulling out of a Chik-Fil-A, I got a wave from the passenger of a gold Mini. Later that day, an Indigo Blue Mini waved. Maybe there's hope yet for the wave.
Zombie Mini drivers...
The last 15 Mini's I've passed haven't waved, or even given a second look. So much for the Mini "community"
Whenever I pass a Mini I usually honk, or wave...some sort of response to let a fellow Mini driver know they are part of the family....but lately I've been getting the cold shoulder from other drivers. Anyone else noticing this?

I flicked my lights at a mcs this morning and the driver just kept on sipping his coffee. Yesterday, I saw a new black cooper and the two women in the car didn't even look over.

NW 'burbs of Chicago here, and most are friendly as can be with waves, grins, etc. At least that's true if we're not zooming by each other too quickly to get a good glance

Be glad your not one of them Zombies.
I get the same, maybe 2 out of five waived at us during a drive last Sat.
They are the ones missing out, but sometimes I think I might be a little scary looking too. Live and let live.

yeah last year at this time i'd get a wave / flash (i mean lights!) from just about everyone... now though i'm lucky if one in ten bothers. it seems to me that new owners aren't as crazy about their cars... besides the ones that come on here, of course.
Man I thought this was a thread about Mini coopers in the new movie land of the dead!!!! lol
Well I'm the same way with the horn blowing and waves but I would say out of the 10 or so mini's i've seen around here about 6 have at least waved back. Onc lady just stared at me when I passed her an tooted the horn and waved. She was like what does he want? LoL.

I was driving home from work on Friday and passed a girl in a blue S - we were going in opposite directions at about 20 mph in traffic. We both nodded and smiled. It was very cool. We have cool cars.
My 'wave-back' rate is pretty good here and 'over the hill' in Silicon Valley. I'm used to the miata though, so I have to stop myself from just sticking my hand up and running into the roof!
