Steering Column Height

Is there a specific height the steering column should be? Should the center of the wheel point at my face? chest? Does it matter? Curious if all available heights have to be deemed safe for the air bag deployment...which I assume it would be, but what provides the safest benefit?

Thanks In Advance!!!

I have nothing really to back this up but it is my understanding that safety benefits from the airbag are only related to the distance from the wheel. I dont think vertical adjust is a factor (unless you have the wheel squished against your thighs, then you might want to consider readjusting a bit). Im pretty sure that in general airbags are large enough vertically to accomodate any wheel position. That said, adjust the wheel to where your arms ands legs are comfortable so you can better avoid a crash and not have to use the bag at all

Also depends on how much of the tachometer you want to see!! If you have the steering column really low, the top of the steering wheel essentially obliterates any decent view of the tach.

Even with the seat all the way down and the steering column all the way up, I cannot see the top of my tach at 12 o'clock (and I am not a tall person - 5'10")

Sit at least 10 inches away from the center of the steering wheel hub. However, you also need to maintain a safe and comfortable posture while driving.

I think adjustable steering wheel, doesn't really "tilt" hence I don't believe there is a difference from the airbag point of view in which a specific height position is safer than the other. I think the system is designed to work and provide like protection whether the wheel is at its lowest or highest level of adjustment.

The MINI has "intelligent" dual stage airbags. Would not reallhy about it that much.

I started a similar thread a while ago, wondering about the kind of steering wheel height Mini drivers prefer to use......didn't get much of a response. I found very early on that I liked to keep it in a very low position because for me, it intensifies the go cart feel.....which I really like. Anyone else?
