Unfortunately, a number of us have posted about similar experiences of SUVs, Pickups, et al. tailgating our MINIs.

That is a large part of the reason why I performed the rear light mod! (Plus I think it just looks much better.)

I had an ATDS(Anti-Tailgating Defense System) on my Jeep Cherokee. Maybe I should design something like that for the MINI too. I already have the parts to put it on my Bonne and just have not done it yet.

I took the rear window washer fluid sprayer and modified it so it shot a single stream of fluid 10-15 feet behind the car. Was highly effective but at about the 8 foot mark at highspeed the fluid hit the turbulence coming off my rear end and turned into hundreds of little drops instead of a single stream.

Two car lengths is a lot in commute traffic, You should see it on 880 in the morning??? Southbound 880 forget about it!!!!

Nice. Very nice. "Spy vs. Spy" MINI style. Any ideas on a foul odor release to tie into one of the blank toggles? Not everyone has carbon-filtered climate control...

I get tailgated all the time. This morning on my way down to the office I am working in today I had a white van about a half a car length behind me (maybe less) in heavy, but fast moving traffic. If I had had to brake quickly for any reason I know he wouldn't be able to stop. Fortunately I was able to get away from him with no damage done.

I worry that I can stop much faster than most other vehicles out there so if I get tailgated I just gradually slow down until I feel they would have enough time to stop.
Usually they back off or overtake.

Put some skunk juice and red dye in your rear washer reservoir. You could also put a large flip up mirror on your boot tray for the dicks who tailgate at night with their brights on.

I am going to modify my MINI so that when an SUV is tailgating me I can hit a button to release carpet tacks behind my car. That'll learn 'em.

How about a catapult mounted on the dash to launch projectiles up and out through the sunroof? Eggs, paintballs, etc.

Last night I was being tailgated in my mini and since it has happend so often and I was kind of in a very bad mood, I hit my brakes REALLY hard and the guy or gal had no choice but to stop and move into another lane. Yes, I admit this was VERY immature on my part but it gets really frustrating when the speed limit is 50 and your going 65 and someone behind you is tailgating you because they insist on going 95 miles an hour down a commercial highway. AAAHHHH!!!!

There is something about confronting tailgaters that has always been a concern for me.

They're tailgating you, this is a pretty solid indication that they are probably stupid. So I ask myself do I want to interact with this moron and possibly cause some kind of conversation at the next light. Invariably the response is NO I don't want to "meet" this idiot. Especially since the meeting could easily escalate from, me calling him by his first name "stupid" to me being hit by whatever article he has with him, fist, pipe, you get the idea.

So I don't think I will enact any of the really interesting proactive tailgater tools that are being discussed......maybe if I was younger the washer fluid attack would be appealing.....

In most cases I will continue to A) outrun them or B) let them get by me at the first opportunity. Think of yourself following a drunk driver, are you safer with him in front of you or do you really want to pass him and risk having him ram into you when you stop at the next light.

I made the Washer Fluit ATDS back when I was in HS so it was a funny joke then.I used to squirt my friends cars with it if they were behind me in the parking lot exit line.

I only ever used it on the highway a few times and most times the car was far enough away that they did not really get soaked but the saw the stuff shooting out the back and were scared off.

For an excellent example of Tailgater's just desserts plus a candidate for the Darwin award, check out this article from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

Up here in NW Wis., I've only seen three MINIs in the last six months,... So I'm sure we'll get the same. However, I thought about putting a 'caution yellow & red' bumper sticker on the back that reads "NUCLEAR POWERED VEHICLE! STAY BACK 500 FEET!"
I wonder if that will work????

I have always had it in my mind to do incorporate countermeasures into my vehicle. Here is what I have thought of:

Some kind of box located behind and under the car that is opened by solenoid and is filled with those nasty 4 sided triangles.

An additional spray nozzle off the rear bumper that sprays something that won't wipe off with windshield wiper (or WW fluid).

A Q-Beam that is 1 to 2 MILLION candlepower (they exist) that points out the rear window.

A solenoid based paint gun mounted front and rear.

AND, all controlled by this: Racer Boy SHIFT ****

What do you think???
