squeal when starting out

2002 cooper.
44,000 miles.
bought Mar 31, 2001.
so new problem. whenever i start the car, and start out of a space, there's a loud squeal from the engine bay. seems to be connected to the steering motor, as it's only after i've turned the wheel. it lasts maybe the first 5 seconds after starting the car, and doesn't resurface until the next time i start the car. has anyone else experienced this? any recommendations on a cure?

do you know what a loose fanbelt sounds like? Does it sound anything like that? Usually belts "squeel" if they are loose. If thats the case you need to take car to a specialist asap.

I've had power steering pumps make noise when they're low on fluid. You might check the level, just in case.

Your accessory belt may need a tensioning adjustment or replacement. Not unusual that it would be a loose and squeal when slippery and cold.

It could be something far more serious, so don't let it go..
