Hi Peter,
It's the Flux Capacitor. Where on the Cape? I'm in South Dennis. If you want to get on the Cape Cod MINIs emailing list give me a shout at steve@minisontop.com

p.s. It's the sensor for Automatic Climate Contol.

It lights up whenever the ECU detects a UFO within a radius of one hundred miles.

The technical term for the device is the purple nurple.

I love these threads where someone asks a serious question about some unusual part of the car (usually this sensor, or the alarm sensor in the roof) they get a flood of silly answers in addition to the 'true' answer.
