R50/53 Bad experience on MINI2?
>>"Dom" is the username of a regular poster over on MINI2. I believe that's what is meant by that. (I guess he's not universally liked....although i haven't had a problem with him)
>>
Oh, I thought it might have been like a short name for Moderator that was Domineering or some such. Dom is Mod spelled backwards so I wasn't sure if that was the connection or not. I've never been to mini2 other than when someone posts a link to it. Thanks for the explanation.

i like the flow of this site and also many times it seems people havent got a clue about the mini and the site treats them with respect. saw some flames the other nite and most member didnt tolerate it. this is supposed to be a fun car for fun people. if you want to be a snob buy a rolls or a ferrari, been there and done that and just plain car nuts are mini people.
I wanted to take a minute and provide my perspective on the issue at hand.
Many moons ago (before I even considered launching MCO) I spent a great deal of time on MINI2 and found that there was a lot of very useful information there...I think there still is. At that time MINI2 had been in existance for almost a full year, was a focal point of content and discussion around the MINI, and therefore developed a large following. So what motivated me to launch another MINI site you ask? Well the thing I (personally) was missing with MINI2 was a pure focus on North American interests, community, grassroots motorsports, and aftermarket supplier market. I thought that I could create an environment for all things MINI in North America...and I think in a large part this vision is being executed.
That said I welcome the constructive criticism that I've seen posted in this thread. There are a lot of things that can definitely be improved...things that I'm working on even as we speak; many things based on your feedback and trends I see in the use of the site. While I won't be able to resolve every issue with the site I am working diligently to provide new forms on content and features to encourage contribution of information so that everyone can benefit.
One thing that I want to mention is that in order to have truly good content I can not be the sole source of it. Every member of the site must contribute in some fashion to improve the 'knowledgebase" contained in the site. This could be technical information, how to change your oil, dealings with dealerships, etc.. The lifeblood of the site is contribution. This along with some truely unique features and content-rich relationships we are developing will continue to help MCO grow.
One last item that I wanted to address is the policing of threads and their appropriateness to a given forum. Contrary to popular belief I can not monitor every post made to the site.

As one of the threads asked what does your username mean?
JWHCARS - JWH(my initials) CARS(CARS because I am a CAR NUT)
Both sites have pros & cons I read more than post , I like it here the most!
We all know this is OUR site as was said it is now time to contribute

>>That being said, sometimes that gets annoying. A lot of times the threads tend to get off-topic quickly, and finding the pertinent information becomes more trouble than it's worth. MCO threads, I've found, tend to stay on-topic a lot more than those at MINI2.
Which reminds me did anyone see a preview of Lord Of The Rings 'Twin Towers' Yet?
While we are having our love fest over here, I went MINI2 and researched the answer to a simple question that went unnoticed in the midst of all this good cheer. In the meantime, I'll be hanging out in the 'Can't wait for another Off-Topic thread club.'

I love myself most. Does that make me a ******? But seriously, if you can't have fun and talk seriously about Minis at the same time what is the point? BTW I just ordered the BMP intake, got an email from them immediately confirming order and should receive it today. I ordered it online Sunday.
I think, initially some aftermarket suppliers, were anxious to get their sites up and products online before they were really ready to roll. The first aftermarket product I ordered took over a month to get, no email confirmation, no nothing. I won't say who or what I ordered because there really is no point.
As far as sites go it is really a personal preference. I like this site better. T-shirts are nicer.....I like the set-up better and find it more user friendly. As far as technical info is concerned I'd say both sites are about equal. Off topic is off topic. Who cares? Don't like it don't read it.
As far as cliques go.....come on it is not high school anymore. Got something to say? A joke? I want to hear it. Figured out the best aftermarket exhaust...let me know. I won't care if it is your first post or your 2000th.
Now we come to the issue of 'flirting.' I must say I enjoy the input from all the women on the site. I am a flirt....not afraid to admit it. I'll flirt with anyone except maybe DaveinDenver. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Oh. I forgot one thing. Lmini......you are a sweetie.

I think Cooper4us's criticism was both very accurate and appropriate. There are far too many off topic posts on this site. Everytime you look at the five most recent topics, four out of five are off topic. This board is becoming a playground for people who want to increase their post count (you know who you are).
I still like this site and will frequent it often, but it could be cleaned up a little. As stated earlier, it gives a very unprofessional look and feel when you see some of these off topic discussions dominating the boards.

Hence the reason those off-topic posts are in the Off-Topic forum. You don't need to go there if you choose not to. Many MINI owners (and future owners like myself) like to have some fun. When it comes time to go to work, I work like a mad-man. But when things are slack I like to have a little fun now and then. Choice is the American way. Freedom is the American way. Tolerance is the American way. Taking in others' cultures is the American way. Having fun is the American way. Without these life wouldn't be 'life in America'.
Here's some stats for you about the amount of content and where it's being placed...
# posts : Forum Name
22638 : MINI Talk
5554 : Off-Topic
3260 : Beneath the Bonnet
31,452 posts in the three most active forums.
Off-Topic only accounts for 17.6 % of the posts. That's less than 1 in 5.
So is 17.6 % "far too many" ?

Motorthis, I don't think anyone here is trying to flame you. I don't think I flamed you, however, if you feel that I did, then I offer my sincerest apologies to you.

There is a lot of discussion in the Off-topic forum and the only way to reduce off-topic discussion would be to remove the forum altogether which I'm NOT an advocate of. MCO was designed to be a community of MINI owners and enthusiasts. My desire is to offer everything necessary to support this community...which includes an area to discuss everything not MINI. That said, everyone who spends time in Off-topic should also strive to drop in a useful tidbit of MINI-related information whenever they can in one of the other forums.

I sincerely hope this isn't in any way directed at me....
I found this site before I found MINI2. I only use MINI2 occasionally, however....and usually only when I am planning an event. On whatever computer with whatever connection I use, MINI2 actually loads slower for me than MCO does which is something that deters me from it and in addition alot of the folks on there seem really cliquey....I have found that people are generally nicer on MCO so now I really only come here.
This is just my opinion though and to each their own.
(and thanks 2minis!
)

As a newbie on both MCO and MINI2, I must say that the gang here on MCO is way more friendly and helpful than some of the people on MINI2. I've been hanging on both boards though to fill the time until my MINI arrives in Feb. It sure is one hell of a wait! Kudos to you guys though for being so receptive to us new folks!
