R50/53 Coding cruise control
Coding cruise control
I think I am ready to upgrade my diagnostic tools.
Is there a new bidirectional diagnostic tool that can code in cruise control on my 2004 pre-face lift R53?
I know in the past guys have NCS or INPA, but I want this to also work with my 2018 F60 and my 2007 Land Rover.

Now I truly have no idea what to think
I tore into my 2003 MCS that has cruise control and compared the wires coming from the clock spring it to the Bentley manual. They are the same.
Now I wonder if I need the retrofit cruise control kit. If I add the 3 wires to the clock spring just like my 2003, why can't I just code the cruise control and have it work without the extra clutch switch or additional wiring to the DME?

MY 2003 has cruise control and the only switch on the clutch is the one on the master cylinder. My 2003 does have 5 wires from the clock spring as compared to 3 on the 2004.I don't see why I can't replicate the additional 3 wires on my 2004 and then get it programed for cruise.
Help me understand why my 2003 has a wire to pin 20 on X6004 of the DME and works fine, but the retrofit kit needs wires in pins 85 and 101?
Not trying to be argumentative, I am not schooled up on the inner workings of the DME and I truly do not understand this
Jeff.

Ok that may make more sense. I think I will wire my 2004 up to be just like my 2003 and have the shop program in cruise control. I will report back in a few weeks when that is done whether it works or not, I will update you.
My MC40 has a build date of May 2004. It is a pre-face lift car. It should be the same as my 2003 MCS.
Thanks for the help

Not sure that I was much help, but you’re welcome.
You might search for MFSW retrofit threads. This thread is for an early ‘05, but it might still be relevant. Stuff seems to get weird around the changeover from pre- to post- facelift. The same goes for those really early cars.
There may also be some difference in the R50 and R53 retrofit, but I’m not sure. I have a facelift R50 that I optioned with cruise, so I’m not super familiar with adding cruise.

I think I may possibly almost be heading in the right direction
I feel I have learned more in the last 30 minutes than I did in the last 3 weeks. I wanted to confirm the information that I had gathered these last few weeks from various forums, web pages with wire diagrams and the Bentley manual.
I won't clog up the thread with the VERY lengthy responses I got from ChatGPT, but I will show what questions I asked just as I asked then so you can reproduce the responses and maybe suggest more questions that I can ask to help narrow down what I need to do.
QUESTION: If the wiring on a 2004 mini cooper without cruse control is the same as a 2003 mini cooper with cruise control, can I add the multifunction steering wheel and reprogram to computer to add cruise control?
ANSWER It gave me the same info that I had already found. basically maybe yes, maybe no.
QUESTION: both the 2003 and 2004 are R53 mini cooper S with the same wires in the steering column and same wires on the clutch pedal.
ANSWER: If the wiring is truly the same , just replacing the steering wheel and reprogram will make it work. Some details about the clock spring and wires in the steering column and pins in ECU's. Also check inputs from brake and clutch pedal. and coding the ECU and EWE
QUESTION: A new clock spring with wire harness was added to the 2004. The 3 wires in the steering column go to the DME /BCU are the same on both the 2003 and 2004.
ANSWER: On the R53, cruise control buttons send signals directly to the DME (engine computer), not over CAN like newer cars. and then it goes into details about coding DME, BCU and KOMBI. Then it lists the DME as a Siemens MS45 and says there are no cruise vs non cruise DME it is all software driven.
QUESTION: the 2003 was built in May 2003 and the 2004 was built in May 2004both cars are manual transmissions.
ANSWER: The05/2003 DME is a pre-facelift and the 04/2004 is most likely a facelift DME. It then says that my 2003 is most likely a MS45 DME and the 2004 is most likely a MS45.1 DME. It then describes the brake / clutch to DME relationship and that I had already confirmed the steering wheel and clock spring. Then it warns that the 05/2004 may have a brake switch logic and that would be a 4 pin switch (mine is a 3 pin switch). It then asked if I would like it to tell me the coding steps.
QUESTION: please give me step by step instruction specific to MS45.1
ANSWER: Lists the 3 types of software needed. NCS, INPA, K+DCAN and to have a battery charger connected.
step 1 confirm hardware inputs. Step 2 Add cruise control to vehicle Order (VO) Step 3. Code Modules. It then gives a step by step walk though on each software type. and again says my build should be MS45.1
QUESTION: Can I check this with a Foxwell 510 scanner?
ANSWER: Yes as long as the NT510 is the BMW/MINI version. Then gives step by step instructions on how to ID the DME. it then gives a step by step on how to check the hardware to insure the DME can read the cruise / brake / clutch switches in live data.
Hope this helps someone as much as it helped me.

For those with cruise control - does cruise control show up as an item on the VIN decoders for you? Depending on which decoder I use I'm getting various different results but none of them are saying cruise control. I don't think my 12/2003 came with the 3-spoke steering wheel currently installed but I'm not sure if it should have cruise. Seems weird to have a Cooper S with auto climate control and sunroof and heated seats but not option cruise.
I'm using this one:
VIN Decoder - Mini Cooper Forums - Mini Cooper Enthusiast Forums
Strange that it lists "climate controlled glove box" and 3 cupholders but doesn't comment on presence or absence of heated seats.
I also tried this one but wouldn't recommend the website it's full of ads: bimmer.work : VIN Decoder for BMW

Speaking of which, I still haven’t found all my original brochures from back then. I’ve got them in a box somewhere…
Oh, and I didn’t have any issues with ads, but I’m running an ad blocker.
