Hi, i saw an image of a r53 with a dealer option retrofited soft top.
Im thinking about going with a Twingo mk1 soft top since they are easy to find and really cheap.
I was wondering has anyone done this themselves or does someone have experience cutting the roof, how important is the brace on the middle of the roof (where the interior light is and where the split is in the factory galss roof) and what can i do to gain back the strenght?
The twingo folding roof is 1 piece and would go across the whole roof meaning i have to cut that brace out.
Image of the factory option and a RedBull mini i found with the twingo sunroof:
Personally I would never do that as its cloth and thus not durable in the long run. It will leak at some point. There are others like the Fiat 500 and DS3 that have the same setup and they all develop the same problem, cloth gets worn and it no longer seals around your roof.
The factory sunroof is very good imo, all you have to do is clean the drains every so often.
Given that this is an USA forum I don't think many will know what a Renault Twingo is. It's a clever but tiny car from the '90s.
Interesting project! Be sure to reinforce the roof after cutting.
Spoiler
The brace is crucial for structural integrity, so if you remove it, reinforcing the roof with additional bracing or a roll bar is recommended. Welding in support bars along the sides or an underbody brace could help regain lost strength. Have you considered consulting someone experienced in convertible conversions?
