Camshaft wear

Hey all, decided to tear down my engine over winter up here in Canadia pushing 200km. Plan was to service the timing chain, complete gasket set, and clean the engine of carbon and sludge. Upon inspection of the camshaft it has tremendous wear mainly on cylinder 1-2 lobes, the lifters however are immaculate. I had read and seen more of this online, but am confused due to the lifters being fine.

Question, has anyone else seen or had this happen. What did you replace, what was damaged.

I unfortunately do not know the history of this engine, its only been in my car for 10,000km. I am just concerned if there is more to the picture as in blocked oil passage. Thoughts please and thanks!

I think cam lobe wear is somewhat common. I know when I did a valve cover gasket on my engine at 155k miles, I had very similar wear on the exhaust lobe of cylinder 1. My rollers on that cam lobe did show a little bit of unusual scoring, however. I continued to drive that engine until I blew a head gasket 10k miles later. That engine is not in my car anymore. In my case, I was planning on replacing the camshaft and all the rockers just because I would feel better doing it that way.

I could agree on that from what ive read. Your further proof of this theory of it being common on an R53. I can totally agree about the feeling right replacing it all, but at this point I may toss in a used true camshaft and see how wear goes. I have spare engines, heads, ect, could be entertaining seeing how far it goes and monitoring wear from here out.

Thanks for the thoughts!
