I took delivery of my 05 MCS saturday. I tried a search on this question, but found nothing. Sorry if this is an old topic.

When I open the door with the key in the ignition, the speedo, temp and gas gauges all jump around a bit. Dealer says this is a normal quirk.

Any thoughts?

 

It's called MINI electrical voodoo mojo. Mine does it not when I open the doors, but when I turn on the radio prior to starting the car...

Speedo dances? That conjures up some very unpleasant images...

 

Yeah mine did this too-I cant remember what I did, whether it was open the door, or close it, but I remember doing something, and always seeing the speedo needle jump up a milimeter or two and then back down.

 

Mine does too. When key is in ignition and the door is open, my speed needle vibrates. Lucas electronics maybe?

My theory is that the battery for the key gets charged when it is in the socket. The grounding for that circuit must be on the same as the door and dash circuit. Since it's not just my car, it must be a side effect of the way it was designed....hopefully not a major problem.
