Some do this for an oem look, i have seen the plastic dip and spray, up close its pretty rough.
This is the best grade tape. 3M

The tape, definitely do the tape. They usually come ready to apply, no trimming needed, but a slow patient application is required. It's so exact that being just a mm or two off will produce a thin slit of chrome peeking out from underneath. The glossy ones seem to be a bit thicker than the matte versions. The matte texture will match the other belt-line at the top of the windows a lot better, but it's thinner and tends to break if you try pulling it off too quick for the sake of correcting it's course. Either way, the roll comes with plenty to spare, so if you make a messy first go at it, you should have enough left over to reapply certain sections. Easy job, only takes about an hour from start to finish (including surface wash, prep, application and clean-up). Just watch out for the front corners, they're the tricky spot; start with the doors to get a feel for what you need to do and it should go on smooth.
