Things to watch for when having a new windshield installed.
A short time ago I had to have a new windshield fitted to my 2006 R50. Safelite did the work, and generally speaking I'm very satisfied with the service.
However, there are a couple of things to be aware of when this work is being done.
Firstly, they broke the small trim piece/molding that fits to the car above the A pillar.
This has a keyhole-shaped location slot in it that slips over a clip attached to the body.
The correct way of removing this trim piece is to slide it forward about 10mm and pull gently toward you.
I guess that they learned from this side because the driver's side is just fine.
Now this little piece of trim cannot be purchased individually.
So, unless you can find this piece in good condition from a breaker, you have to purchase the whole length of trim from front to rear.
I got mine from ECS Tuning, plus a few extra clips just in case, at a cost of $141. Yeah. And that's for each side.
The other thing to watch for is the weather strip molding/seal that fits along the top of the windshield.
Installers like Safelite use generic, flexible weather strip that they cut off of a roll.
This can, and does, come loose when driving along and tries to beat the sunroof to death!
I ordered a genuine BMW/MINI part from Outmotoring, because they had it in stock and ready to ship, for $40.
This has a thin section piece of "u" shaped metal inside and is of the correct length. From what I can see and find online the genuine weather strip is fitted before the windshield is bonded in place.
Now I just have to figure out how to fit this semi rigid weather strip without having to remove the bloody windshield!
Now I could have just used some Butyl sealant and bonded the flexible weather strip in place, and then used super glue fit the trim piece but my OCD would never let me live with that.
My original windscreen (Brit-speak) has 3 small stone chips now. When time comes, I'll replace with OEM vs aftermarket - despite roughly 2x part cost. Another aspect to be considered in advance is risk when removing the lower trim pieces of breaking the retention clips for those. From youtube videos seen, it was stated the only way to replace those with new is while the glass is out, i.e., broken pieces can be removed but insufficient access room for new clips until then. I ordered some in advance so when time comes, I'll have those in case one or more breaks. IIRC, common to other trim locations. Pic & link is ECS', however I bought 15 @ $.55/ea + postage.
Fluent in Brit-speak. Born and raised there, soon to return.
I agree on the clips. If anyone is replacing these or any other moldings, it is always best to look on real-oem for the appropriate clips and order double what you need.
