HELP! Temp gauge shoots up to red after start.

Hey guys, first post ever because I’m having issues with the temp gauge reading hot right after turning the car on. The car is cold, but is reading hot. Also the fan and power steering fan stay on and won’t turn off until I unplug the battery. I did a whole clutch removal and change all the parts on the sub frame, along with supercharge fluid change. There is a hose that is leaking pretty bad too and will be replacing tomorrow, but would that be a reason to immediately shoot to red before it had time to warm up? Not enough coolant in the system causing this? Thermostat issue?

If it's reading hot *immediately* after starting, I don't think that could be the thermostat. Maybe the temperature sensor?

Do you know where the temperature sensor is located on a 2002 Mini Cooper r53? I was looking earlier and had no luck.

It's on the back (transmission side) of the cylinder head, just beneath the thermostat housing, I believe.

It's in the cylinder head behind the thermostat housing.

Edit:@ghostwrench beat me to it.

Thanks guys for the information. I’m going to go check it out, maybe I forgot to plug it in. The car was fine before beside leaking from the hoses causing air to get trapped inside the system.

I just check right now and it was unplugged. I either forgot to plug it in or it came loose. Thanks so much! I’m going to have to take the air box out to plug it in, so Ima just change the thermostat while I’m at it!
