Are some r53 internals forged as standard? Not sure which exactly but personally I would hold out for the proper part, especially vital as the crank is

1. Doubtful; two different part numbers. The R53 one is also discontinued. Will defer to a builder who knows but like AcidK1 alludes to, there's likely a reason R53 cranks are different (especially material for strength).

2. Would check with Way Motor Works, Outmotoring, and maybe one or two other vendors who routinely do engine resto/mod work regarding both questions; maybe they have an R53 crank "laying around." Way currently has a rebuilt short block R53 available on his website. Could also post a WTB ad in the Mini Marketplace and keep an eye out for part-outs.

Seems to confirm, r50 is cast and r53 is forged.

Just noticed the rod and journal bearings are different too.

Yeah you got to be careful when you order. Lots of parts house will say R50,R53 are the same. They are very different internally.

No cranks are different. Biggest thing is S is Forged and Base is not. Also they are different sizes so you can't interchange.

I have rebuilt cranks before depending on what is wrong with them, but don't ship them so you would have to pick up in Atlanta.
