R50/53 Refinishing BBS wheels?
Refinishing BBS wheels?
I just bought a used set of the BBS 17” wheels two piece and some of the clear coat is coming off of the polished lip. The inner grey spokes are great and don’t need any work so what would be the best way to re clear the lip of the wheels?
There are a couple of threads regarding this topic. Search for R98 or maybe web spoke for example.
I refinished my R98 wheels a couple years ago. They had chipping clear coat around the perimeter. I tried to take them apart but snapped the head off the first bolt I tried to remove so I stopped.
I ended up masking off the center painted part and using aircraft stripper to take the old finish off. Then I sanded with wet/dry sand paper. I think I may have started with 400 and then moved up to 600 then 1000. Assuming you want to keep clear use a 2K clear as regular clear just chipped right off. I used Spray Max 2K clear in a spray can. You could also use standard 2k clear with a spray gun if you have it.
Good luck

Rudejoe has given you great advice there. I would not take the wheels apart as the bolts get stretched after they are installed at the factory and tightened. It's not possible to buy the correct bolts for BBS R90 - Ask me how I know.
You csan either use a rattle can of clear coat spray after they are sanded down, or you could polish them with a dremel with polishing pads and metal polish. You could go as far a s a mirror finish which is what I intend to do in the next couple of months with my own R90s.

Find a good painter. Or if you can diy it yourself with some good paint.
