Custom/bespoke 3" Intake Pipe

Has anyone ever tried a bigger intake pipe? Silicone replacements are a solid upgrade, but has anyone ever created a 3" intake pipe instead of the 2.5" intake? And then off course put an cone filter on it with a 3" velocity stack.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/253181463886

I searched around, but havent found any evidence so far. Also the plastic pipe after the throttle body is almost never modified.

For the pipe after the throttle body I found this, but seems to be bad fitment

i also want to swap that intake pipe... and would like to run a larger filter on a velocity stack feeding the throttle body inlet... once i ditch the dinan intake. the intake pipe is a restriction to flow similar to the "pancake pipe" on the 1.8t vw motor. the guy who did his custom setup in the modification forum did report better performance out if it. in my case i would want to control flow into the air box somehow to keep bottom end torque.

forgot to add... i have a CAI for the ram that has a 6" wide inlet (plastic intake tube) where the filter mounts. massive filter. helped mid to top end power on the diesel but hurt bottom end part throttle response.

That carbon fiber tube is NOT a bad fit.
The tube has gone thru various iterations both for fit, strength, and airflow. It's also gone thru dyno and real life street tests.
While the gains have not been huge, there are gains in his design. One is going thru a long term, street test now. While I don't know exactly were he is in the testing, I also know that it was more of a design task, to see if big gains could be had.
He also had a full set of larger tubes up to the air filter that he was going to build. I'm not sure if he ever finished them.

I can contact him to see if he will ever have them made for sale.

As far as the larger filter tube. I'd say that it's more for show, since the throttle body is probably less than half that diameter..!

Thanks for the info Mike, was based on old information so it seems. Yes, the throttle body would also need enlargement for bigger benefits, but I think a larger intake would already help, its worth testing!

yeah i would be interested in one, even a small build of them would be good. price would probably fairly high but to eliminate that bottleneck would be good. it is entirely possible that bmw engineered it that way to help with bottom end torque and it could be removed with the swap. i would be ok with that, have other tools in tue box to help with bottom end torque

I'm quite interested in the TPE design because I greatly dislike the stock plastic part.

It seems the TPE design has been in development for quite some time and has undergone refinements which does inspire confidence,
is it ready for sale yet?

Recently scored a big stack of old MC2 magazines and was looking at issue #3 from 2006 and saw an M7 ad for something I had never seen before, did not realize that they made such a bit of kit.

There exists on NAM a link to a pdf of fitting instructions:

There is a large thread on the topic:

Looks seriously well-built:

I wonder how many they made?

My only guess is it was very expensive so not many got sold?

Yep,
out of production.

Just the charge pipe by itself would not work with stock configuration I think?

Some elements were reconfigured and slightly relocated it appears?

Here's an earlier version of it:

This thread shows a very nice DIY replica done up in fiberglass:

And,
here's a classified from several years ago, rightfully described as a "rare unicorn" part:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-complete.html

Lastly,
here's an incredibly cool design made for a twin-charged setup,
s/c + turbo

As seen in this thread:

Twincharging always reminds me of the famous Lancia Group B rally monster:

Are you going to order one up from the guy in Greece?

I looked at his kit and it includes crash bar spacers. I'd assume that is going to push the front bumper out by the thickness of the spacer...? Its looking like my MINI is just about "road worthy"... no CE lights, slight vib which I think is coming from the DS axle. Not enough to park it but it will get addressed soon enough. The Ram has 2 bad ujoints that will come first. Once those are done then mods to the MINI can begin. The intake pipe may be one of them.

Not decided yet, currently Im still thinking in going custom. Starting with the intake pipe (3") and then maybe a ported throttle body. I will leave the supercharger intake pipe (the plastic one) as is for now.
