Cold air intake

Hi guys, I’m new here so I don’t know if this has already been asked but,
What is the purpose of the box sort of heat shield thing that aftermarket intakes come with? and how is that any different to the stock intake?
also, instead of buying one of those, wouldn’t it be better if I put a cone filter where the air inlet on the grill is then connect a silicone hose directly to where the air goes into the engine, while completely bypassing the stock air box? Please give any thoughts as to why this is a good/bad idea
thanks

Open cone will suck in hotter air, so you will need to cancel that out by adding a bigger intercooler. I also want to test the direct air filter, but that is something for the next couple of months

[edit]
You will also need to take into account the hose which is connected to the intake pipe (from the rocker cover)

How would it be sucking in hotter air if it is placed directly behind the grill? where it is in contact with fresh air as the car it moving

The CAI is designed to draw air from outside the engine compartment hence the enclosure. The calm air is sourced via the windshield cowl thru an opening in the back of the enclosure. Most CAIs come with a larger opening to increase that cool air flow. A cone filter near the hot radiator would still draw warm air denying you the cool dense oxygen you're attempting to introduce into your engine.

But what if I was to design and make a heat shield for the cone, that would go right up against were the inlet used to be. I assume that would eliminate some of the radiator heat, while also gaining direct air flow.
ps. Thanks for the responses!
