Oil Consumption?

I have 160,xxx miles on my 05 R53 and change my oil every 3k miles and today I checked the level and to my surprise it was down a quart and a half and still have 800 miles to reach 3000? No leaks or smoke? I do however have a oil catch can but wouldn’t think it would effect it that much. What’s going on?

When is the last time you cleaned and or replaced the PCV? It’s to replace(YouTube). Rock Auto, Parts Geek and Oreilly’s have the best price. The OEM and aftermarket appear to be the same but the aftermarket is a fraction of the price. I clean mine before every big trip and or twice a year. Search the benefits and they do mention the effects of oil consumption on dirty PCVs and the reasons. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I believe one quart per 1,000 miles is considered 'acceptable' by MINI/BMW.
It seems that most cars do better than that.

yeah it’s never done that before, usually when I change the oil I’m down maybe a half to 3/4 of a quart. I just thought it was excessive this time.

The PCV valve has a spring inside which loses its tension over time. Replacing is very easy and the valve costs about 20-30 bucks.
