Mini Cooper S 2006

I have a 2006 mini Cooper s have had it 3 months has 85000 miles on it, when I'm in automatic sometimes it stumbles on acceleration surges jerks badly and won't catch the next gear. Took it into a shop not a BMW mini Cooper but they did a diagnostic check suggested the transmission service they didn't have the tool technician found 3160 ratio monitoring and 6th gear and 3300 shift response with that information he thinks my transmission is failing any suggestions or advice would be appreciated thank you.

Oof.

Hafta ask: you / he did check the fluid level and smell and looked for leaks right?

If the car is still driveable in 'manual' mode, maybe try to change the fluid and filter, see if that helps? It may not have been done at all, or the previous owner may have put the wrong fluid in it.

Apparently, it's a thing with these cars- Mini (BMW) loves to tell owners they don't need to sweat changing the fluid or filter in either auto's or manuals ("sealed for life!") when there's plenty of evidence and testimony to the contrary.

Also, lots of discussion and YT vids about these Aisin trannies having solenoid issues, where they are discussed under the guise of the 09G model designation used in VW Golfs and modern beetles. Solenoids might be a weak point, especially with wrong or dirty oil inside. But so can wrong or dirty oil and/or a mucked up filter. Before pulling the valve body and swapping out solenoids though ($$) maybe try the fluid and filter change first. And don't make it a Fram filter.

Recent related discussion over on the R56 board:

R56 Anyone have any info on a GA6F21WA tranny rebuild??

My neighbor has had some of the same issues with her Automatic, she has had a transmission Filter and fluid service done and from what the Tech told me he did a software update to the controller that seemed to help but when I ride in the car with her I can still feel it stutter once in a while.

I have a t-shirt that basically reads ... " The only thing an Automatic Transmissions provides is DISAPPOINTMENT"

A year or two ago MINI has gone back on idea of the Fluid For Life thing and most shops will do a transmission Fluid/Filter service now.

Best of Luck.

Motor On!
