What IS this part???

Hi all,

doing a brake pad and rotor change on my 2004 r53, when I noticed the goopy grease like substance in the wheel well. It's made a huge mess, and I think I've narrowed the culprit down to this part sitting above the cv axle. Any idea what it is? To be specific, I believe its that small metal tube that's enclosed in that hose that I think sprung that leak.

Thanks for taking a look!

Far more likely that a CV boot has torn.

Really?? What a shame, these axles aren't even... a couple months old. I'll inspect for tearing

Yeah. That thick grease looks like it comes from a torn cv axle. It will fling the grease around since the axle spins. That metal tube is the power steering line. Check to see that you are not losing power steering fluid.

I actually changed my axle twice in a short time frame also. I bought a duralast one from autozone and it got a small leak. Lucky it was under warranty, so I went back and got another one. So far this 2nd one that I installed is doing good.

Bro you should also try to clean up all that old oil too when you get a chance. My subframe looked like that when I was doing the clutch. Threw it in the back of my truck and took it to the DIY carwash. Also convinced me to inspect and replace every gasket under there .
