I've been kicking the idea around for a while now...thinking about selling my 03' JCW R53 and getting something else to play with. I bought the car back in 2011 with 88K miles on it, and it's currently got right at 174K miles on it. It's in perfect mechanical shape, interior is the JCW blue/black leather, Valeo clutch, Koni FSD shocks, poly suspension, engine, transmission bushings, 22mm Alta rear bar, IE camper plates, all the JCW stuff.....etc, etc,.....pretty much all the standard performance and handling bolt-on stuff everyone does.
What's something like this even worth? I've been my daily driver to and from work for the last 8 years....100% reliable, and it's never let me down. But with the miles it's got on it...I'm wondering if it's really worth anything at all.
A well sorted, perfect mechanical and nice cosmetics car should be worth something. It is 17 years old and modded though so.... If the ride is good and it's not loud there should be some good value there still. I have no idea what the market in your area would be.
You should read up on how to market a car before you list it. I have had good results by listing every detail, every mod and at least 20 good pictures of the clean car. Definitely list in MINI forums.
You might get more total $$ by taking off as many mods as you can and sell them separately. Eg RSB, intake, 380 injectors, camber plates, exhaust bits, etc. Custom Alky injection is going to scare away many potential buyers, whereas a 15% pulley with stock tune and parts is not so scary.
Honestly? Maybe 5 grand. R53 Minis, unless they are the limited edition versions, just don't have much value going for them. They have really hit rock bottom in terms of value. In a few years time when R53s start becoming collector cars, then perhaps value will start to creep up. By comparison, my Mini with almost 164k miles on it, is probably worth about 3-4 grand, and that has only a few mods.
As Aspen pointed out, if you are serious about selling it, you're better off parting the mods off, selling those separately, and then selling the car as stock (provided you still own the OEM parts).
Partout will always recoup more money than a straight sale on a moderately (or more) modified vehicle.
That said, I'd have happily given you 5k and probably considered 6k had I been shopping that price bracket of R53. That's a bit above what they're "worth" currently though, as I'd say a project without major rust is worth about $2k-2.5k, and a sorted, OEM example to fetch maybe $3500.
Having all maintenance records in hand helps a lot, that's for sure. The supercharger maintenance is the principal concern for these vehicles, the reason that most of them died at 100k miles, and why they hold a reputation of being maintenance nightmares - all leading to a currently-bottomed-out market value.
I gave a little under $5k for my 06 MCS with about 80k on the clock back at the first of the year. You might get close to that for the JCW, but it's a pre-facelift car with a lot of miles. Your best bet is to find someone like me-a car nut who's decided to buy their first MINI as a toy.
I generally agree that you're better off to pull the mods off and sell separately, but unfortunately most of the mods you listed aren't going to come off easy (Valeo clutch) and aren't going to bring a lot on resale (camber plates and Konis).
If you find the right buyer, I'd say you could pull between $4000-4500.
Unfortunately, there really isn't much I could put back to stock. I'm not pulling the Koni FSD shocks off and putting the old beat up stock ones back on it (even if I had them). If I pulled the injectors and swapped them out for the stock ones, I would have to get the car re-tuned. If I pulled the 17% pulley, I would have to find a JCW pulley to put back on it. If I pulled the camber plates, I would have to go out and buy some new stock ones, etc, etc, etc.....not really worth my time (or money) to do any of that.
Thanks for the info guys, I was thinking it should be worth somewhere around $5,000. Honestly, it's been 100% reliable for me.......but if I was in the market for a used car, one with high miles like that would really make me nervous. Fortunately, I do have extremely detailed service records since the day I bought it....so that would probably help a little.
You might be your own best customer. Car seems to be running great, so why not keep it, it you enjoy driving it? A new(ish) one in good shape will cost and the reliability of them seems to be just OK. Just a thought.

That's kind of where I'm at. I doubt I could get more than $5,000 for it.....and I don't think I would ever find a fun and fast car to replace it with for anywhere close to that. Plus, I've been through it top to bottom....so I know it's history, and I know it's "right".
I will probably just hold onto it..........at 174K miles and running like a champ, it's still got a lot of life it in.
Now take what would have been the payment on the car you wanted to replace it with, and put that aside every month in a separate account. Use that account only to pay for maintenance on the MINI. When you do eventually replace it, maybe you can pay cash!
Your car looks nice! I too have been thinking about getting something else to play around with, but I put way too much money into my '03 bringing it up to tip-top shape, that i know ill never ever see that money again if i decided to sell it. It actually got a bit scary as I was recently hit by a lady (she drove into the side of my car trying to cross the road i was driving down) and the amount needed to fix the car was basically the 80% threshold to totalling the car. I ended up getting the car repaired, and they fixed some rear tail light rust as well, but it was sobering to realize that my near perfect R53 with 82k miles was going to be written off from some minor rear fender damage. So your perceived value of the car unfortunately is never near to what most other people would be willing to pay for your car. I've resigned myself to keeping this car for a while now and just continue to enjoy it! I may post it up online here and on specialty websites with a value i'd be ok with selling it for, but i highly doubt that i'd get that amount, even though its less than just the cost of the parts I've put on the car. Good luck with whatever you end up doing.
I'd say $7K to $8K for a very good example with VERY low miles and completely stock. From the one photo I would GUESS it would go for $4K to $5K range as it looks great. More photos of the inside and out might let us GUESS better at a value. I just sold my Justa for $1900 if that gives you a starting point. They aren't worth much right now and modifications typically don't push the value up but quite to the contrary as the average person would believe that the car had been run hard.
Good luck with the sale if you decide to sell it.
FWIW - I already miss my Justa and it's only been a few weeks. I may miss it less once my MX-5 RF GT-S arrives.
