How to diagnose which lifters are making noise???

Hey all, got a quick question about my R53. Pretty much since I bought it the car has made lifter noise for the first 5 minutes of startup and occasionally as I'm driving hard and it passes 3K rpm's. Its never been bad enough that I felt the need to rip my top end apart and figure it out, but now I've got a cracked valve cover so I'm going in there anyways and would like to fix the problem while I have it apart. I picked up a valve cover and full set of rockers from the junkyard ($30 all together, love those places) and I'm determined to piece together 1 working set of rockers from the 2 now in my possession. This is where ya'll come in, I have absolutely no idea how to positively identify which rockers are bad and which are good, and was wondering if anybody knows of a simple test I can perform to figure it out? It sounds like my car only has 1 or 2 that are bad so I'm hoping thats not too far out of the realm of possibility. Any advice anyone has would be awesome!

Thanks everybody

Grab a length of hose about 3' long. One end to your ear and the aim the other end over and perpendicular the valve cover. You will be surprised how well this will locate the sound origin. You should be able to narrow it down to which of the 4 sets. Been using this since high school and few would take me seriously that it works.

I feel like my father has been doing a trick like this for my.entire life lol the man puts a long flathead screwdriver handle to his ear and the flathead part against various parts of the engine or turbo, etc to see if there's unnecessary noise.
