Chatter noise at idle?

I got out of the car today and left it running and could hear a chatter noise from the engine compartment but as soon as I depressed the clutch in it went away. Is that a throw out bearing going bad?

Throwout bearings sound very scratchy, not rattly. Does your car have a single-mass flywheel conversion / lightweight flywheel?

Good question I don’t know? How can you tell the difference? I know lately I have been having trouble going into 1st and reverse.

Differently sounds like you need to look at the clutch assembly (throwout bearing, clutch plate, pressure plate, slave cylinder, and flywheel).

Best of luck.

Motor On!

I am reasonably certain that you are experiencing the same sound as am I. It is most likely the sound that dual mass flywheels make as they age; depress the clutch and the sound goes away. I don't yet full understand what is going on, but I have lived with it for many years and many many miles.

Could be the shift linkage. The transmission end of the cables have ball and socket connection. The socket is on the cable and is :suspended" in a rubber bushing. That bushing can break down and then the cable isn't able to move the socket and ultimately more the shift lever on the transmission. Check the cables at the trans.
