A/C blew freon out of compressor shaft

Was replacing my ac pulley and coil on my 2002 MCS, all of a sudden, the freon started to blow out of the seal of the compressor around the shaft. Great. Am I looking at replacing the compressor now? Seems like that's the logical choice being that the system will now have to be recharged. I've never had this happen before. Compressor was sitting on a box under the car when it let go? Any thoughts or experiences? Thanks

Most likely the seal got damaged during the pulley removal. It is most likely cracked. You could replace it, or buy a compressor. Whatever you do, you should replace the dryer tank as well.

That's what I assumed too. Was hoping to just replace the coil and not have to evacuate the system. Guess that did it for me. Looks like I'll be replacing the compressor and dryer tank and be done with it
