Cooling fan not working

2005 Cooper S fan not coming on at all. Am I correct in that the fan will run any time the AC is running. I bought the car in August and ran it till now and have never herd the fan run. I have a temp guage and it never got hot. I checked the fuse and swapped the relay to no avail. Is there any thing else to try before I buy a new unit. Thanks Andrew Curtis

Heck all the fuses and relays. It’s possible that your low speed fan relay is faulty. It’s a common failure including on my R52. There is a way to check the relays in the underhood fuse box by shorting two terminals in each relay but I don’t remember which ones. This will tell you if your fan is working on high speed and low speed. If it doesn’t work on low speed then it’s probably your low speed relay that is inside the fan shroud. It’s easily replaceable and not expensive. If it doesn’t work when you short the high speed terminals then it’s most likely the fan. Be sure to check the wiring connections that connect to the fan itself. The low speed circuit should activate when the AC is on. The high speed activates at a set temp, which also escapes my memory.

Given the age of the R53's, there is a fan motor resistor inside the top of your radiator. This resistor controls the fan speed. Since coolant flows through it, it is fairly common (even amazing that it lasts 10 years) that the resistor wears out. MINI would have you replace the entire radiator, but you can replace just the resistor.

You can see the broken filament on mine.

That may be one cause to consider.

Good luck with your diagnosis.

I used my battery charger to see if the fan was working came on high and low depending which wires were used. So I started up the car put on the AC and waited. About 4 minutes in the fan came on and then cycled on and off. I then turned off the AC and waited for it to get up to temp. Fan started cycling on and off. All is good. Im pretty sure the fan and radiator are both newer units. Thanks for all the help. A Curtis
