Is 5qts oil too much?

Hi all,

Just changed my oil today. I've been doing it for years now on my 05 MCS. I had a friend who owns a garage change it a few years back while I was changing out the oil pan I believe and he told me just put the whole 5qt oil bottle in the engine. Ever since then I figured I'd just do the same since he was a former MINI tech who worked on 2nd Gen MINIs. Have had an oil leak until recently when I had to change out my engine valve cover since another shop I took it too said there was a crack in it. I checked if there was any oil leakage since the replacement and I thought I saw a couple drops on some of the bottom screws of the engine near the oil drain valve. I'm not sure if that's old oil or new but I filled up the thing with a whole bottle of royal purple 5qts. I double checked the manual to the car before I did and it said capacity was at 5.1qts. The reason that this has become a question for me is my roommate was telling me his friend had an issue of overfilling his engine with oil and I have been worried that 5qts might be too much but the manual itself said 5.1qts capacity. Is 5qts too much?

If the manual says 5.1 quarts then that is what it should be, and yes 5.1 is correct so you are .1 quarts low. I would add the additional oil. The engine gets its bottom end lubrication from the crankshaft throwing oil up onto the cylinders so the higher the oil level the easier to splash. Some would say the the .1 difference is no big deal. If so the factory would have said 5 quarts.

That would be me.

If you put in 5.1 quarts, it isn't going to stay at 5.1 quarts forever. Nobody checks the oil and can tell by the dipstick that it is 5.1 vs. 5 quarts. And when you change your oil, I'm pretty sure .1 quarts of oil are still floating around in your engine. So that being said 5 quarts is probably all you need.

Oh ok. Yeah, I was concerned because I read somewhere that after emptying the oil there could be .5 to 1qt left in the engine. 😲

Just put oil in till the stick reads full. Be sure to let the filter fill up when you check the level.

Between 4.8-5.0 is maybe my average, depending if I get all the oil out with a warm/hot engine.

No matter what you do, you should still periodically check the oil level with the dip stick.
