Rattling passenger window

The passenger window (at least that is what it seems like) is rattling away over bumps. If I crack the window slightly, the noise stops. I can't get anyone else to drive it and have me listen to be sure and no passenger is able to identify the root cause.

Any idea what the deal is and/or if there are any common causes?

Thanks.

A window thatbrattles when it’s down without being held under tension is unusual. If it rattles when the car is moving you should be able to tap or lightly pound on it and duplicate the noise. It may not be the window but the window mechanism. Or it could be a rattling speaker cone like I had on both front Phillips speakers. Drove me crazy cause it sounded like it was coming from the dash area. Take your door panel off, easy to do, and start mowing around in there. You’ll find it.

I had the same issue with my windows. I pulled the door panel off and found part of the window rail that was vibrating on the glass. After I straighten it out...the problem was gone. It's pretty easy to pull the door panel off and see what's going on in there.

Thanks! I was ready to consider removing the door panel....until I realized that there is a rattle from the passenger side when I roll the driver's window down as well. This makes no sense to me.

What speakers do you have? If they are Phillips like mine they may be rattling. Both mine did and I would never have figured it out till I took the panel off and pressed on the cones.

Not sure which speakers I have. Do I have to remove the door panels to find out? Thanks.

if you have the basic system I believe they used Phillips. But don’t you need to take the panels off anyway to find the rattle?

So I did end up having Phillips speakers and the speaker itself appears to be the root cause. Are new replacement speakers available? No interest in going aftermarket since it was such a pain to remove the door panel.

What causes this mess?

Poor speaker design. The coil on the cone is too short and it bounces out of the magnet when it moves under high volume. They are 5 1/2 inch speakers however you won’t find speakers that have screw holes that line up with the original. You’ll have to drill at least one hole in the door and splice the wires. The door panel is no big deal after you have taken it off a couple of times. Get a cheap set of panel tools at harbor freight.
