R50/53 Make over
Make over
I replaced all the wheel hubs and replaced the driver winder regulator and motor, now time for some fun.
I’ve ordered all this, can’t wait to get started:

I picked up the k&n and black hoses, I chose SS so it would be easier to powder coat.

Front main seal yes, but I didn’t buy an idler pulley. I’m doing the SC because I want more, and upgrading crank pulley because I think it’s failing. Smelt a rubbery burn and belt squeal.
yeah, after you brought it up, and a little looking around, I ordered a gates off of amazon. Thanks for the heads up, I’d hate to have done the work and a couple thousand miles down the road have to replace it.

What is the condition of the upper and lower motor mounts? They would be the other items to look at if they haven't been replaced/inspected recently. When you do the tensioner and supercharger pulley its just a few extra bolts to remove the upper if you need to.
If it happens to be a preface lift car the upper mount will not leak that I've seen. I'm pretty sure its just a soild mount. The face lift changed the upper mounts some with the major being the change to a fluid filled upper mount and the brakets from the mount to the motor.
Here is an example of a preface lift upper motor mount setup. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ml#post3863869
Post face lift example can been seen here. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ml#post4170277
Which one do you have? My 2004 r53 is a preface lift due to its build date and equipment.

I have a pre facelift then. Two spoke steering wheel and my xenon lights don’t have a projector lense, and many more differences I found here:

so, how do you tell when a solid one needs to be changed?

A look at the upper mounts, as there are two of them, should give you at least a basic idea to their condition. The one on the frame near the tensioner can be hard to tell without lifting the motor due to its position. If you do replace it make sure you get the replacement hardware as some are considered single use.
There are several guides out there on how to replace them. I used Pelican Parts' guide found here https://www.pelicanparts.com/techart...eplacement.htm

Here are the soild mounts https://www.waymotorworks.com/oem-en...4-r50-r53.html Way even has side by side pictures on what the new and old one looks like.
The fluid filled ones have a metal can around them. There are upgrades to both types, just comes down to which one that you need/want.

After seeing the pic of one taken apart, it makes you wonder why they’re priced so high.
This was an early version of the facelift mount without the perpendicular brace on the housing. I wonder if they updated the actual rubber isolating part of the mount when the brace was added. Last edited by RB-MINI; Oct 21, 2018 at 02:35 AM.
