R50/53 taking the motor out
taking the motor out
Hello ,
First new to Mini's
I am the new owner of two 05 hatchbacks.
1st 180k, bad motor, good 5 speed.
2nd 90k, bad auto , good motor.
Plan, Take motor from #2 and put it in #1
This is supposed to be a low budget car but what should I do to the motor when its out ? Timing chain ?

If you take the motor out of the car that has 90,000 miles on it....and all of the plugs look good and it's got good compression.....I wouldn't do a thing to it. Maybe check for oil leaks and replace some gaskets if you need to...but that's it.
I would replace the small stuff that are known to go bad while you have access like the thermostat seal, camshaft sensor o-ring, oil cooler seals, timing chain tensioner, etc. Don't forget to transfer the oil cooler as the auto doesn't have one.
Also, check the belt tensioner assembly and the crank pulley. Depending on who you talk to, some would recommend servicing the supercharger and changing the oil. It's a good time to do a SC pulley install, too.
Not sure what's accessible from the top of the subframe with the engine out, but I would see if the power steering lines, swaybar bushings, LCA bushings, can be done at this time.
