Yes, but i was concerned on the shape if the ring as it doesn't match diagram.

Maybe im haveing trouble comprehending the literature... its saying put top at the top and stepped ring below it.... not the orientation of stepped ring top should face up.... right?

I would assume the one with "top" on it is the top ring and that all lettering is towards the top.

I just replaced my pistons/ rings with CP brand and the shape of the rings matched the Bentley diagram exactly.

i dont know why i didnt even look at piston... the ring that says TOP dosent even fit in the top groove. they are machined to different diameters.

Crap, my bad. It was the directions that came with the rings. Sorry about that.

Nik

FYI - I found the bentley manual unless for stuff like this. Haynes was much better.

Am I looking at it wrong or doesn't it say in the instructions that the ring marked TOP is the top of the second compression ring.

I think you are correct. If you notice it is thicker (when looking from the top) and the piston grove, second from the top, is deeper. Thicker ring goes there.

So from your picture of the rings the one on the left goes in the second (from top) grove on the piston. And the left one is the uppermost ring.

I wasn't even looking at the size of the ring, I was just reading the directions:
Figure 16.10 says:
Fit the "second compression ring" with the dot, or word Top.
Then in the instructions:
Ensure that the "Second Compression Ring" it's fitted the correct way up, with its identification Mark (either a dot or the word "Top" stamped on the ring surface) at the top.

Since the other ring isn't marked at all, and that one is, it must be the second compression ring.
At least that's the way I understand the instructions....

yes, its starting to make some sense lol... sometimes i find reading these manuals difficult.

also could have used some trial and error... the fat ring(says TOP) does not even fit in the first groove at the top. compressed all the way the ends don't touch and the ring sticks out far to much. which is evident form the pic of the piston i posted above, showing their groove depths.

when i get home from work ill take a pic. of the rings in the wrong grooves then in the correct grooves
