R50/53 Production Sequence # Q
Production Sequence # Q
I've searched, but can't find an answer to this: Are the last 5 or 7 numbers of the VIN indicative of the order in which the vehicle was built?
If, for example, a VIN ends in 12345, is the next car built # 12346?
So if you check the VIN's on all the recently delivered cars at the dealer and find that there are cars with "later" VIN's than yours, would this indicate that maybe there was a spot inspection or some other holdup keeping your vehicle at the VDC? At my dealer I noticed that there were several cars waiting for their owners to pick them up with VIN's that had the last 5 #'s very close to mine-including higher #'s. I know the middle portions of the VIN's are all very different, but there seemed to be a pattern of sorts.

Well, yeah.
But I'm kind of caught in a bind. Waiting for the MINI before I can sell my current vehicle, and the potential buyer isn't willing to wait around. And since the MINI was supposed to be ready 8/28, I'm wondering if there is a holdup for some reason. ( My dealer just gives the routine responses.) As I was leaving I saw there were about 6 or 7 new Mini's that looked exactly like my ordered one That's when I noticed the similarity in VIN's.

If it was supposed to be ready 8/28, you should be able to take ownership of it soon. Actually, you should have been able to do so already, but things happen. My MINI was delayed for a day or two because of a problem with the trucking company. I would advise you to kindly ask your buyer to wait until the end of the week (maybe bribe him with a few hundred dollars off, if you have to). By then, you should definitely be driving your new MINI. Good luck.
In VIN matters though, apparently the number is sequential, i.e. normally cars are assigned the numbers in order as they roll off the assembly line. Here's a link that explains the whole thing:

Thanks bmovierat. According to the link you provided, the numbers do correspond to production order. So if I have a 136 and there is a 139 and a 140 already at the dealer then I guess it stands to reason that there is a holdup of some sort.
read Daveindenvers thread on the distribution center and find out about a few of the things that can hold up a car on this side of the pond:https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=21112
