I am going to purchase a new Cooper S when one is available, either new or pre-owned (once I have the cash). I wanted to know about any issues that current owners have come across? I heard mention of some throttle tip-in lag.
I just wanted to be aware when I go look.

PS
I took this picture near Heidelberg Germany. Anybody know who owns it?

My S is arriving in August. Having driven both the Cooper & recently the Cooper S, you will not be dissapointed in the S. The throttle off lag, if thats what your referring too, is much more pronounced in the Cooper than in the S. Fly by wire for general driving is in my opinion fine. The best way to find out is to go and drive one. You will never reach a concensus here.

Cheers

Thanks.
I suppose most people would call it boost lag or (lack of response). Car and Driver did a great write up of the Cooper and Cooper S in this latest issue. It's worth getting. Brock Yates (of Cannon Ball Run fame) just purchased an S model. They recommend the S model without any gizmos. Listed for about $19200.00 Hope I can find one for about that...

We've got 3.8k on ours now and there's no lag or lack of response. It's a very torquey engine. I suppose you could induce a lag if you stand on it with the revs at less than 2k. If you stand on it with the revs anywhere near 3 it takes off like a shot. I like thinking that you can put your foot in it as much as you want and the computer will only give the engine as much as current conditions will allow.

Turbo cars have lag and its proportionate to the size of the turbo. I also have an RX-7 that I play with and there's lag, but when it kicks in you get a big kick in the butt. Once you get a feel for the engine and the lag you just put your foot in it a little earlier than you normally might.

The MCS has a very linear power-band. Combined with that fantastic tranny it's a real blast. I haven't had too much of a chance to push it through the twisties but you can feel there's a whole lot more there. It's begging to be driven harder.

Didn't drive one yet but the MCS seems to have a slow throttle response when blipping it at rest. Some mags blame this on the heavy twin-mass flywheel. From the reviews I've read and heard sofar this is definitely noticable when flooring it at low revs, for example at a quick take over in city traffic when driving 10-20 mph in 2nd.

So far the bad news. The good news is that all those who experienced this say that it's something you get used to and can be solved by chosing a lower gear. Wouldn't worry about it, take a test drive and get an S:D

If the heavy flyweel is a problem for you, you might think about replacing it... They do have one at http://www.mini-madness.com which I think I may order after the break in period... Should give you that little extra "PEP" everyone desires.

My current car is a turbocharged Subaru Forester. Compared to this the Cooper S has zero throttle lag.

My current car is a Peugeot 206 1.1, compared to your Forester it's probably one big throttle lag Comparing it with an S even goes beyond my imagination

BTW are you the same Basil as on the MINI2 forum (who has specced his S in about every available colour) from down under, Melbourne?
