Winter has arrived and with it my 2005 mini cooper s has been making a very weird tapping sound. Every morning when I start my car it makes a tapping sound until the engine warms up, or I drive it for a little. The sound also got much worse after I got an oil change where they put in some 5w-30. Im not sure if the oil is too think for the weather (lately its been around -15 celsius) or something else is going on.

Really should have lifted the bonnet for this video.

I get a sense from the sound it's the Hydraulic belt tensioner....how many holes are showing at the top of the strap that runs thru the spring.

 

Yeah sorry, I guess I should have. The sound seems like it comes from the top end of the engine if that helps any. Do you know where the strap is located in the engine? I wouldn't know where to start looking haha.
