But if you are willing to barter...I'll give my CAI for some database work?
Just kidding...hahahahaNo, really can you do some database work?
No, wait, I really am kidding!
nbame786, good for you on earning a full ride at school, of course it takes hard work to get there. But if ya want to earn respect, don't start by asking for handouts. Instead you might try starting with something like, "MINI owning college student available for odd jobs in the (your town here) area."
It may never hurt to ask, but how you ask can greatly affect the outcome.

Since this thread doesn't seem anymore to really be about nbame786's basic request, l'll take a moment to note that the real issue here isn't whether it's totally bad or all OK to accept "handouts" from those who can afford to help. I think all of us oldsters (and not-so-oldsters) can think back to at least one occasion where a friend or relative with means might have extended a helpful hand...and we gratefully accepted.
No, the real issue is one of PRIORITIES. Getting help to go to college to begin with, or perhaps help with the downpayment on a first home, or even wedding presents are examples of help to achieve a high priority (for most folks) goal. These are presumably also aids which if accepted will help the aid-recipient to a position where s/he can pay back the favor (either actually or in-kind). But aid to get a "better" car - or as is the actual case here to improve a car that is already pretty good as is - is NOT a high priority request. This is where it's totally legit for one to be reminded that many get through college with NO car or at best a less than nice one (me? 1972 Buick that I rebuilt mechanically more than once).
But then again, learning to set priorities is part of the aging process as well. Pitty that some never figure this out; but good thing that many do.

One has to consider some economic factors in making a big purchase such as stability of employment or lack thereof, family emergencies etc. You never know what the future beholds. I know quite a few NAM members had to sell their MINI due to layoffs and economic hardships.
Unless you are willing to have two jobs minimum and wait tables while temping during the day, I say go for it.

Those of us in the latter, resent the ease, opportunity, and lack of sacrifice those in the former enjoy. Yes, I guess it doesn't hurt to ask for handouts. And if the rest of us cannot explain to you why it is shameful to us that you feel this way, I guess you'll never understand.
I have to believe, though I cannot prove it, that hard work, delayed gratification, and never asking for handouts, builds character and makes us stronger.
