Can't get into reverse

I recently had a rebuilt Midlands tranny installed in my 04 Mini (a 5 speed R50 manufactured in November of 2003). A couple of weeks after I had the tranny installed, I had a shift linkage cable break. After installing new right and left cables, I find that I can't get into reverse. Does anybody out there have any ideas about why this is?

What part number did you order for the cables ? Also did you check the shiftier tug moves freely.

I can help you out , it will be a 11 digit #.

Thanks

My mechanic put the old shifter cable (the one that wasn't broken) back in and it seems to shift into reverse now. What could be the problem with the new replacement cable (if it is the right part) that would cause the problem? I will get the parts number on both cables as soon as I talk to my mechanic and report back.

Well the two cables that he ordered were #25117515455 and #25117515456.
He wasn't sure about the number of the cable that worked and which one didn't. He did say that the one that he replaced that worked was the one that allowed shifter movement from front to back. The one that didn't work (go into reverse) was the one that allowed shifter movement sideways. Since the old one that was going to be replaced wasn't broken, he replaced the new one that didn't work with the old one and it seems to be working properly. It appears that the one cable was defective or for some other reason didn't fit. Are there any other possibilities?
