Engine Rattling

Hey All,

Long time reader, first time poster. I have an '05 S whose coolant reservoir had been leaking badly. So I ordered a new one from Amazon and installed it, last night...easy.

But when I turned it on there was an incredible amount of vibration and some noise coming from the bottom/back of the car sounding like a backfire... If I step on the gas, the rattling increases until it gets to about 3000rpm then it is much smoother, but as it comes down the rattling increases again. Eventually, the engine just shuts off.

BTW this is all while the car is idle, I'm scared shitless if I drive it around the block it'll blow up on me...lol

Any thoughts? Thanks,

Mike

Welcome to NAM! Not that it sounds like it's an issue with your install, but maybe re-check everything. This tech article should help as well as provide you with a reference guide.

Mike: The symptoms you describe could be due to a misfire. Just a theory: Perhaps, when wrestling the coolant reservoir around its supports, you damaged or partially dislodged the adjacent low-voltage ignition coil connector. (It's doubtful any of the high-volatge plug wires were dislodged: they're robust and tightly bound to the coil assembly.) Let us know how things turn out.

OR, perhaps you dripped coolant onto/into the ignition coil connector, causing a short. Unplug connector; rinse and thoroughly dry all contacts; reconnect.
