Engine Oil Light (at idle)...

Hello,

There have been other threads regarding this, but I believe my case is slightly different... Any clarification would be much appreciated.

Recently I had the crankcase gasket replaced. (The engine was found to have just 3 quarts of oil left. And just before, the engine oil light started flashing during idle.) I thought this would take care of the oil pressure light issue, but it hasn't. After significant warmup/driving for a fair number of miles, it starts up again...

The oil filter has not been changed recently so it could not have damaged the bypass valve or the drain back plunger... I'm assuming the actual low oil pressure (due to the leak) must have changed the setting of the said valves.

Question: Would the current situation damage my engine? If the low pressure is caused by an open valve, the oil is still flowing at least... And since the light goes out at the slightest tap of the gas pedal, I really wouldn't mind this.

Bottom line, I would like to save myself the $600+ to replace the oil filter housing.

Any explanation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Any resolution? Same thing is happening to me after replacing the drain back plunger. Should I continue to drive?

Cooper or Cooper S? Have you recently changed the oil filter?

Thats what i wonder , is you changed the oil and bumper the plunger or something. If the drain back plunger is damaged or sticking then it might mean a whole new housing.

When I had this issue (mine was caused by a non oem oil filter) I found that the oil pressure actually dropped to 0 at idle. I continued to drive it and just held a high idle at red lights. Hasn't damaged my car from what I can tell 15k miles later. Also note that the oil light came on the day or two after the filter was changed. So it wasn't instant. I think the $10 filter is worth the try no matter what, unless you KNOW you have a genuine mini filter.
