Oil Change Reminder ?????

I just had MINI change the oil in my car.

After that change, when I now start it, the odometer briefly displays "Miles Inspection" with a number just over 15,000.

I seem to remember it use to display something like "Oil Change". With a number far, far less than 15,000.

Am I just imagining such?

you reset the computer obviously ....

in short ... the count flips between oil change and service following the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual

How could I have reset the computer?

Is there a way to get it back to monitoring for my next oil change?

sorry

I missed that you had MINI aka a dealer do the change

bottom line is the same .....

the 'computer' reads your driving style and adjusts the change interval ... and there is usually an oil change 'tween a 'service' and service INCLUDES an oil change

It IS counting down to your next oil change...
They are due every 15,000 miles!!
The computer alternates "inspection" and "oil change" cause the oil change is part of the inspection...
Order is
15,000 miles, oil change
30,000 miles, inspection 1 (yes includes an oil change)
45,000 miles oil change
60,000 miles inspection 2 (yes, includes an oil change)
Start over, and remember to add DATE limited MX, like brake fluid and coolant flushes...
And the computer and in the mini is pretty primitive.... The 15,000 miles is based on nothing more than fuel consumption,.....so drive hard, the miles till due drops, drive lightly, it goes up!! No date adjustment in it...
I do mine at 7500 miles or 6 months...

Interesting, in attempting to find an answer, I found this youtube video...

It seems this guy had the same problem. The video starts with the odometer saying "oil service", and after he resets it, is says "miles inspection". He notices that difference, but just ends the video as good enough.

If "Miles inspection" is the same as "Oil service", then I guess I will just have to leave it as such. I hope it still adjusts itself, because 15,000+ miles is about 3 years for me. I pretty sure my MINI would remind me after just about 1 year regardless of miles.

Also, after all these years, and all these oil changes, I don't remember the odometer ever saying anything but "Oil Service" at start up. Maybe the MINI service dudes in the past knew a trick to get it to always say that, and the guy who did mine this time, doesn't?

Regardless, my thanks to all.

Did you even read how it works ..
It is working as intended....
Look at the scheduled MX list I provided....
Sure, most folks do oil changes at 5000 or 7500 miles between the "factory" required changes...but the system goes by the schedule I told you in the prior posts.
No adjustments for time, temp or driving style beyond just a simple adjustment based on total fuel consumed....please remember, the MINI'S computer dates to 2002 when the gen1 was introduced.....and even then was not the most advanced.
If you have total disregard for mataining your car, just do the "reset" again, it will say oil change...
But be warned...
Doing just oil changes, and skipping inspections will be far more expensive and less reliable....

I appreciate your concern, but you needn't worry.

I guess you never actually been to a MINI dealer, but even if I stop by just for a fresh cookie, they put my MINI thru a full inspection, and present me with a detailed report. So, it certainly not like I would able to skip timely inspections (their cookies are too good!).

If ONLY the cookies were truly free....
The inspections are quite in depth...
And NOT the free courtesy inspections...there are filter, belts, lube, coolant, and other items used...
Inspection 1 (some times called the "mini" insoection) is only a few hundred dollars, but inspection two (the major inspection) is more time consuming, and is the mini with added items...more like $1500+...
If you look at the inspection list, neither is hard, but it includes lots of things, and takes several HOURS....one can do 75+% in a garage in a weekend, no special tools.

I could go in and pretend to get service and just eat the cookies and leave.......... But, I would NEVER do that! ;-)

how many miles on your car?

are your oil changes only when the computer reaches zero? Or at 12 months?

MINI says change the oil when the computers says OR 12 months. Low mileage drivers can go YEARS under the 12 month rule b4 they reach the first computer generated oil change. The techs only reset the count at a computer prompted change ... because this ALSO tracks service times. { and then there are the every 3000 people, and the 7000 people }

I seem to remember it use to display something like "Oil Change". With a number far, far less than 15,000.

suggests to me this is the first time your counter has been reset. If never reset it would continue to count down from 15,000 despite your changes. Now, at first reset it looks for the first SERVICE 15,000 later (or more as the computer adjusts for driving style)

170k on the car, and the service records received with the car indicate oil was changed at 7500 mile intervals.

That's when I'm changing it too.
