badly scratched speedo lens and need to replace

It was raining like hell today. I put my umbrella in the car and scratched the hell out of the speedo lens. Has anyone replaced the speedo? Is it just a lens or is it attached to the instrument or bezel? Does it have a part number? Is it easy to pop out?

Cheers,

JJ

Do a search here in NAM and Google. There are products that remove bad scratches from clear plastics. These are used to restore plastic glasses and other items such as your speedo lenses.

I highly doubt you can replace the clear plastic lense without having to replace the whole instrument cluster.

It is worth a try one of those scratch remover products. Some people say they have had success using Meguiar's "Scratch X" paste paint scratch remover on their speedo lenses.

I tried that and it worked for light scratches...but not sure about a hit from an umbrella...

Might want try rubbing compound first and then finish off with Scratchx.
If it's super deep, then probably can't fix it. Mask off the trim (bezel)
around the lens so that you don't take paint off of it.

Don't worry if the plastic turns cloudy from the rubbing compound. the
scratchX will clear it again because it is a much finer abrasive.

I have some mild scratching in the steeing wheel MINI logo and have read of people using scratch-x for that. I'll probably wait till it gets a little worse before trying it. As a test, I did use it on the lens in one of my MAG-Lite flashlights. The thing is like 10 years old and the lens was nearly a matte finish. 1 minute using the scratch-x really worked and restored it to a nearly brand new appearance. There were a few gouges that I did not get out, but with a larger, more stable surface to work with and some more time I think you could get good results.

Ronco scratchaway?

I've seen a product on TV for filling in scratches on prescription eyeglasses that might work. It says you can use it on watch crystals and things like that, so it should work on a speedo housing. Can't remember the exact name. Watch a movie after midnight......

If none of the above works, it's absolutely possible to take the speedo apart and replace the lens with an accurately cut piece of plexiglas.

There have been more than a few posts with pictures of the speedo taken apart such as this one to change the LED colors.
