Intro for a R50 Hillclimber

Hi I'm Mike and I picked up an 03 R50 to stand in for my regular hillclimb car. Its an 03 R50. I'm sure I know the best answer to my problems is to buy an R53 but I am looking for more power. I was thinking about throwing a cam and panel filter in as the most cost effective method of picking up 15-20 hp. I did search and seem to find many arguments in theory but few in practice. Does anyone have any dyno sheets pre and post cam? I don't plan on any suspension upgrades, I have Dunlop star spec on it and find no need to invest further for what I do with it. Thanks for the help. Here is a video from the Burke hillclimb last weekend

is that thing an automagic tranny?

and youll probably need more than just a cam and filter to get the most out of that thing; tune would be your best bet, but not cheap.

you have sport mode on that pig?

It's a 5 speed no sport mode. It's much more steep than it appears in the video. From my experice most tunes on NA motors don't yield much result. Is the Mini different?

preety cool hill climb, how far do you want to go with a hill climb beast? is there a n/a class that you are in? all these will justify how much you will put into your car haha.

you can do a getrag 6spd swap, so you can get into that 3rd gear.

light wheels will help

removing uneeded weight from the car ie. back seats

a cam shaft will help since it will give you more power on the top end of the rev range, while your doing a cam swap, you could put a S model head in for a bit of extra flow, or even get your head ported and polished.

a tune will give you a little bit extra and a few more revs esspecially with an upgraded head.

a full exhaust will help you, more air in, more air out, not to mention the full exhaust will be lighter

depending on how much work is done to the head with a matching cam, you may not have any more low end torque but it will be all up in the 7k-8k rpm range

the real question is, how far are you willing to go?

suspension work will help you around the corners keeping speed, and you could corner balance your car

but that climb is sweet, where was that at?

I really have nothing to add that Salty hasn't already said, but that hill climb looks really fun! We don't have anything like that around here. That I know of. I'm going to look into it right now...

Thanks for the help. I don't plan on going far at all with this car. I have a caged and gutted race car that I have to put back together after an off. I picked up the mini to run for the rest of the season in a street class.

Weight reduction isn't allowed in the class I am in otherwise it would have been done already. I was hoping to pick up some quick and easy power with a cam like I have with other 4cyls originally made for economy I have had but didn't see much for reviews. I don't plan on porting heads or getting wild in any other way. I just really dislike spending money on exhausts or tunes that generally speaking yield little results on small displacement motors.

The video is from Burke in Vermont. I run in the NEHA series. If you want to check it out some more their website is hillclimb.org. You don't need much to run other than a properly mounted extinguisher and SA rated helmet.

ok so you know what you are doing, a cam will help, and a tune with the cam will help it more, i cant give you definitive numbers since i dont know much about the N/A gains, but there will be some

typical gains for the S model are 5-15hp without a tune, and the tune will give about 25 total from the cam, and these are generally street cams.

the exhaust is also very heavy, the stock system on my S was about 70 lbs, the magnaflow is 30, i was impressed on how much the stock weighed, again i cannot comment on the weight of yours, but if you swapped mufflers, i think you would gain a bit more on the topend maybe 1-2 and loose about 30 lb

I didn't even consider the weight of the exhaust. Maybe I will get one. Does anyone have preference of cam manufacturer? Schrick, crower or what ever the one is on ebay (obx I think).

Hillclimber - sweeeet!!! A buddy of mine runs them on his bike, keeps bugging me to go. Last time I tried to enter one was Ascutney in my '65 'S'...rained out and I never managed to make it back. That was a couple years ago...'88 or '89 I think...

So no cage required even in a supercharged car? (I have a '05 'S'). Or does the cage requirement only come into play if you're faster than the break out time?

Sorry, guess this was supposed to be about your R50 - no help there.

I'm guessing your buddy is one of the Max guys? Ascutney is my favorite buts its also the worst paved. You can run almost any street car without a cage as long as you don't break out. You should try it out, even if you just go and work the even to see what its like before jumping into it.

Yes, runs a G450 in Rallymoto and some hillclimbs.

I caught myself poking around on copart the other day, thinking about something for maybe ice racing...hillclimbs...etc. Not sure my '05 'S' at 200k miles is up to the challenge (and supercharger not allowed in one of the ice racing clubs). Going to try to get to one, would be awesome to check out.

I don't know how hard ice racing is on a car but the driver decides how tough to be on a car in a hill climb. I've run some high mileage stuff and a friend of mine runs a 900 turbo with 300k+. If your car is solid mechanically I would give it a shot.

I plan at running at all of remaining hill climbs so if you do make it up stop by for a beer. Ill probably be the only guy with a mini.

It was something of a Mini. It has a Nissan Sr20 and is rear wheel drive. Here is a link to his project thread

http://www.hillclimb.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=931

He had some problems on his first run and didn't get to finish.

Here is a video of my R50 from the event.
