I am simply shocked to read about your story. Good to hear you and the MINI are ok.

I'm really shocked to hear about Florida potholes. I expect those here in Okla, but Florida?

The reason you are safe inside a car is because it's made of metal. The electric charge travels along the outer surface of the metallic object, leaving the people inside safe. It would work just as well if you were inside, say, a metal phonebooth (i.e. grounded with no tires). In engineering terms, it's called a "Faraday cage."
