characteristics of a clutch going out

My friends were talking at a car show the other day (both have auto trans muscle cars, go figure) and they were asking questions about the characteristics of a car that has a clutch going out. Honestly (knocks on wood) I have never had a clutch go out on me n any one of the four cars I have owned with a manual. So, could someone enlighten this vet on his noob question? Appreciated folks!

They start slipping... Generally under load going up a hill.. say, 3rd gear.. floor it - then the RPMs go up and the car does not accelerate..

Later it just gets worse and worse until the car is put in gear and it moves a few feet before it starts to slip..
