Are you planning on doing any kind of shielding around the turbo to keep all of the heat from melting stuff? Maybe it's not that big of a deal?

The reason no one uses the stock IC is because its not very good. It doesnt flow well, quickly heat soaks, has very oval shaped in and outlets which make hose connections harder and has no exit area for air going through the IC from the hood scoop. There's no real cost savings to keeping it either because special pipes and hose connectors are needed that are very tight radius and hard to make, thus expensive. You dont need an extremely large front mount IC for a small turbo R53 and with some hood mods, mounting an IC on top of the engine is not out of the question. But if your going to do all the work to make an IC work on top of the engine there are much better ICs to start with. The cheapest and easiest way for the R53 is a small to med size front or side mount IC.

We'll be making a stainless steel heat shield to protect the cowl and fire wall from the turbo heat.

Interesting, have you run spec clutches before? I have a spec stage 2.
On this board, there has been "debate" on my choice of clutch ")

What lead you to the choice? The OS Giken twin plate is supposed to be the bomb for upper levels of HP.

I have to say, my Spec grabs really well, and I'm used to the noise from the flywheel now.

I can't imagine the Giken doing a better "Job". The GT clutch is supposed to have less "Chatter" and it's rated for up to 250 hp.. The Twinplate is rated up to 500hp. One thing i noticed, the design on the Giken throw out bearing, looks very robust.

For me, after some research, it boiled down to cost, $2k V's $1k was a no brainer.

I think i made the right choice. Good luck with your's!!

Nice build thread!!

We have used the Spec and the Giken. We have run the Spec clutches and flywheels for years with no problems. We have also used the Giken setup. I feel the Spec is a much better value and will hold all the power that the Giken will.

Just curious have guys ever run the ACT HD ckutch and ACT lightweight flywheel?...im trying to find a good combo and was stuck between the ACT or just saving the extra cash for the OS Geiken clutch/flywheel.
my goal for power is gonna be around 300whp not to exceed probably the 350 range...not sure what route to take for this any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.

We have used the ACT and their products are good but we found best wear for the money on Spec clutches and flywheel kits. We don't recommend the OS Giken system, its not better than the Spec or ACT and cost more, so we feel its a poor value.

Sub'd for progress. This is gonna be wicked. Do you guys have any plans for producing an FMIC for the s/c cars or maybe an M7 style DFIC? M7 wants too much money for theirs...

No this is unique to this MINI. Most MINIs keep their radiator in the front.

Water Cooling System

Chris and Austin, Another great job and technical achievement. Thanks for the new photos! Would you share the EWP flow and its Dynamic PSI with us. I can't read the manufacturer or model from the photos. Did you put a electronic temperature control for the EWP? Safe travels, Mike

Its a Moroso pump #63570 30-37gpm. We are using a stock type t-stat and pressure in the cooling system will be 15psi.

How do you control the speed of the pump? or does it run at a constant speed? variable with rpm?

its constant speed. Theres no reason to vary the pump speed. The t-stat controls engine temp and unneeded water is bypassed inside the pump so it doesnt build pressure.
